Well?

Kicker Comp? Infinity? Polk? Alpine Type R? Rockford Punch? I really don't know what to get.

RE's and Adire's are good, but I hear very very good things about the new type r alpines. Check out sounddomain.com's forums, I'm sure you can get a lot of information there. You'll find fanboys for every brand, but at least part of it will be objective.

Best bang for the buck, easily.

But it depends on what kind of music you will be listening to. What are your goals? SQ? SPL?

if he wants SPL, all he needs to get is the 12.1 from RE, and then a 12" XXX from them... sure it might total 1k, but he will kick the SHlT out of anyone elses system.

A kicker comp in a bandpass box with some good juice pumped into it will sound really nice. At 10" I wouldn't go with a ported box, unless you had some serious power behind it.

Throw Elemental Design (EDAudio.com) in there to complete the triumvirate of incredible value, internet-mostly subwoofers (Adire does have a few authorized B&M dealers)

I have also always liked the Alumapro Alchemy and it's in your price range...

ED, has crap now. the owner is a pansy, they dont follow up on their word, and they give you run arounds all the time now.

ED has become a joke to most.

I have a 10" Alpine Type R in a generic sealed box with an Alpine 300W RMS mono amp pushing it. In the back of my wagon it makes some great bass IMO. Sharp, clear, but still that big "encompassing" effect you get from larger subs. The Type R's are rated at 500W RMS, so a cheap amp would be a waste on it, but I love it. Not sure if you can find it under $150, if you know someone who works at BEst BUy you can get an incredible deal on Alpine stuff.

I don't think you understand what a sub's rating indicates at all :(

Why 10"? Is it because they're play tighter bass than 12" drivers and 15" drivers? Or simply because you can't fit anything larger?

Another vote for JL! I have a W3v2-D4 12" in my trunk and it hits VERY hard and is very TIGHT in a sealed box. Most people think I have two subs in the trunk! It never fails to impress me or my fellow listeners. (powered by an Alpine M501 550W@2 ohms)

The best part is the sub is very cheap, but sounds so good! It should be in your price range if you get the right website or the right local hookup.

I own an Image Dynamics IDQ v.2 10" in a 1 ft^3 ported box and it sounds wonderful. It plays loud and deep, while not taking up much room at all. Doesn't require alot of power either.
