Besides sushi, what is good at a Japanese restaurant?

I want to try something different tonight instead of my normal sushi I always order. Looking for something besdies the Teriyaki chicken people always get as well.

What should I keep an eye out for on the menu that might be overlooked by people?

Are we talking about a sushi house or a full japanese restaurant? If a sushi house -- seawead salad and tempura. If a general japanese restaurant . . . errr . . . I know what I'd reccomend but no clue what the dishes are called 🙁

It depends on the type of Japanese restaurant you're visiting. I'd get whatever their speciality is, sushi at a sushi bar, teriyaki at a teriyaki place, and udon or ramen at a noodle house. Tempura is usually good almost anywhere though.

Curry udon is always good. I tried it once and told my girlfriend about it. Now she makes it all the time for me. 🙂

Oh . . . duh . . . something I have to mention -- heated sake has a VERY unique taste, which dulls the alcohol taste and brings out the other flavors. Make sure to try it at least once.

Nabeyaki
Sashimi

Also, if you can find it the seaweed salads are usually good. Don't forget miso soup, pickles, or other traditional dishes.

Honestly, the majority of Japanese restaurants in the US are just as authentic cuisine as Chinese restaurants.

Try Yakitori. Its grilled meat and veggies on a stick.

No no no, the best is Sukiyaki!!!! Delicious!!!

If you can't get that, try Gyudon (Beef bowl)

I can make that (sukiyaki) myself, use seaweed/woodfish stock, mix with soysauce and mirin for a sweet soup stock.

Cook with tofu cubes, bamboo shoots, carrots, shitake mushroom, bean spouts, mung bean noodles(pre cooked)

serve very hot with fresh thinly sliced ribeye steak, and egg.

Gyudon is similar, with less ingredients and it is over rice.

I also like Unajyu(sp?) , it is grilled teriyaki eel over rice.

Tempura is good. I also like sake, it's pretty good... But aside from the sashimi and the sushi, that's about it for me. Udon only does so much.

It depends on what you like, Cheeseburger. If you don't like raw fish, for example, then sashimi isn't for you. If you don't like fried foods, then katsu and kara-age and tempura isn't for you.

What a Japanese or Japanese-American person would order versus non-Japanese is different.

Some typical things a Japanese person would order in the USA:

APPETIZER
edamame
hiya yakko
miso shiru
tsukemono (as a side dish to the entree)

ENTREE
fish grilled shioyaki style (not teriyaki)
sashimi instead of sushi
chicken kara-age
shabu-shabu if it's a cold day
cold somen or cold soba on a hot day

DESSERT
green tea ice cream
mochi ice cream
manju

Bon appetit,
