besides creative what sound cards are for gamers?

I'm getting ready for a huge system upgrade which also means getting another sound card,

I already have the audigy-2 which is pretty good but in my opinion its kinda over rated!!

What aren't you happy with?

The Creative cards are unfortunately pretty much the only game in town for gaming cards.

If you're looking for better sound quality and gaming support, and X-Fi is probably your best option... but performance gains are minimal. Quality gains in the output might not be noticable unless you have nice computer speakers or better.

Thanks YOyoYOhowsDAjello
I'm about to upgrade my system as I have the old 'AGP' type of mobo and of course the older type of cpu too, so next month I'm gonna upgrade to the 939-socket 'pci-e' mobo
and also upgrade my gaming sound 🙂

Right now I am using Creative-Megaworks THX 5.1 550 spkrs/audigy-2 (oem) but really I am not totally taken in by the audigy-2 sound so thats why I am asking about sound cards 🙂

I'm also not liking the speakers too so I am seriously thinking about some Logitech PC speakers, probably the Z 5500. Thanks

Is there something specific that you don't like?

Are you sure you're not satisfied with both the soundcard and the speakers?

Although not as popular as the Logitech sets, the rebadged cambridge soundworks creative sets are pretty nice ones from what I read. Are you sure the Logitechs are going to give you what you want?

I just mention this because if your budget is say $350 for sound, instead of z-5500s + X-Fi, you'd have enough to get Klipsch Promedia Ultras + keep your current soundcard or something similar.

Are you not liking the sound for music or games or something specific?

Hmm, yes that does sound good (a little pun there for ya) you had wrote, "or something similar" like what for instance?

Well, I am a big gamer although I won't let that be the main deciding factor in possibly going to a different card though.

As I also listen to mp3s too 🙂

I loaded up Quake4 and found the sounds to be kinda plain-jane and thats using the audigy-2 along with Creative-Megaworks THX 5.1 550 speakers. ALso the main control module for these speakers are about the most stupid thing I have ever seen...stupid creative technicians 😀

Maybe the sound being so poor is my speakers just about to give up the ghost, I dunno, but I do want a new set of gaming/music speakers.

This guy is looking for a gaming set up.

Z-5500 + X-Fi would probably be the best way for gaming power, second to getting a S750 for 7.1 sound.

For other options in this range, you could almost get into the range of HTIB sets.
Onkyo 780
or
Get a 5.1 receiver and add a quality set of stereo speakers (bookshelf or floorstanding). Upgrade to more speakers and a sub as budget permits and get a nice 5.1 system going eventually... etc.

Oh, the S750 is a Creative music set with 7 speakers...

However a HTIB is just as nice if you don't mind using a receiver on your desk.

Yeah, I was about to post a link to the S750s when AT went down last night. 🙁

hehehe, so thats what happened and I thought it was my stupid cable again 🙂

I used to have the MegaWorks 550 and I personally liked the neutral sound they put out although I thought they had very poor high-end response (no tweeters). Using NCH Tone Generator and my own ears (read: Your Mileage May Vary greatly!!), I found that the useful response of the MegaWorks set was around 40Hz-13KHz. On the high-end they hit a brick wall and on the low end the sub would begin rattling like crazy. Also, mine got to the point where the the volume down button on the control module woudn't work unless you were almost crushing the remote to turn the speakers down.

Anywho, the Klipsch speakers would probably have a more "aggressive" sound (don't know a better word) for games. My brother's ProMedia 4.1s go well with rock music and games, so I'd guess the Ultra 5.1s would as well. I don't have experience with the Z-5500s.

5500 is really one of the best gaming systems, with bass and power, and at about $220. They probably will not hold up against the Klipsch ($350) in quality, but Klipsch is a speaker company, and Logitech a gaming accessory one.
