Dear members of our campus community:

This weekend’s shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and the deaths and injuries of many others in the horrific event at Tucson, Arizona have shocked our nation. We here at UC Berkeley offer our sincere condolences to everyone who has been personally affected by this tragedy.

Such a brutal and violent attack on an individual who has devoted herself to public service is deeply regrettable. It calls upon us as an academic community to stop and ponder the climate in which such an act can be contemplated, even by a mind that is profoundly disturbed. A climate in which demonization of others goes unchallenged and hateful speech is tolerated can lead to such a tragedy. I believe that it is not a coincidence that this calamity has occurred in a state which has legislated discrimination against undocumented persons. This same mean-spirited xenophobia played a major role in the defeat of the Dream Act by legislators in Washington, leaving many exceptionally talented and deserving young people, including our own undocumented students, painfully in limbo with regard to their futures in this country.

On our own campus, and throughout all the campuses of the University of California, we must continue to work toward a climate of equity and inclusion for all. We must be vigilant to condemn hate speech and acts of vandalism on our campuses by those wanting to promote enmity. We must work to support dialogue about our differences and eschew expressions of demonization of others, including virulent attacks on Israel, anti-Muslim graffiti, racism towards African-Americans, Chicano/Latinos and other underrepresented minority groups, and homophobic acts. Continuing to support our principles of community will ensure a better and safer campus. We must do this now so that our students, as future leaders of this great country, will continue to set the standard for a better and safer nation.

Robert J. Birgeneau
Chancellor, UC Berkeley

Keep in mind, this isn't some student, or a professor, this is the chancellor running the school...and this wasn't the day after the shooting when people like Paul Krugman were still wildly speculating, this was yesterday, after plenty of facts have come out.

Confusing immigrants with *illegal immigrants* is typical for Berkeley, but wtf does it have to do with the shooting?

That loon used to be pres of UofT here in Toronto. He, like every other chancellor in the world, is just a respected (in a different field) rich old guy who is well passed relevance.

Good physicist though.. lol. Entitled to his opinions at any rate.

Edit: oh crap, chancellor is not the same in US as it is here.. yay wikipedia.. He actually has power??!?! In Canada, and other commonwealth nations, it is entirely a figure head position and the president/vice chancellor does day to day doings.

Tell that to the gun nuts...fuuuuuu...they won't shut up.

Really? What have the "gun nuts" been saying that wasn't in direct refute to the progressives knee jerk emotional call for more useless legislature?

As a student (but not for much longer) at the so-noted university, I find that pretty much any event will be turned into a ".....why we need the Dream Act" speech. This is the biggest stretch so far but honestly not very surprising.

Realistically, this is probably preemptive damage control on his part. If he DIDNT mention the immigration law, the illegal immigrant student groups.....er....I mean, victimized by white people, outcasted, socially looked down upon by an evil society, student groups, would be up in arms about it.

edit: Don't take this to mean I oppose the dream act, although I think there are prerequisites that should be ensured before its passage.

What that statement sounds like to me is:

"I have an agenda. The bad thing must have been done by someone against my agenda. So let me point out that my agenda therefore must be good."

I think his reference to the gun nuts was to the people who try to seize opportunities like this to ban guns in some fashion.

Actually he's in a perfect place, an Ivory Tower away from all reality.

Yup, agree totally. Prerequisites = get to the back..all the way back of the loooooong LEGAL immigration line and apply the paperworks to get in the US LEGALLY!!!!! Like you know, tens of millions future LEGAL immigrants.
