BEOWULF Upgrade Planned

I need everyone's input on replacing BEOWULF mobo's with newer systems.

What does everyone recommend?

What I think would be a great config are all integrated video, LAN, and disabling keyboard/mouse via the bios. (ATX is a must)

Ideas?? Prices??

I'd suggest something with the words "athlon xp" and "nforce2" somewhere in the description. But beyond that, I haven't been keeping up with what's up to date these days (aside from knowing that Athlon 64/Opteron is the latest from AMD, and that the Tyan K8W is a kickass board), so I'll leave the brand and model recommendations to someone else... 😱 😉

when it comes to WU's per mobo per day it's hard to beat the hyperthreaded P4's - trouble is the cost
those would give the most WU's per square foot of rackspace though 😉

Yep, those 2.4s/2.8s are rocking. Problem is it's hard to find people willing to donate them 😛

If you are quick, you can get a free P4 board from newegg. (After rebate.) I already have one on the way. 🙂

No donations... 😉

I just need to upgrade some of the motherboards.

Everyone has been more then generous with the extras!! 😀

Actually it's not a true Beowulf, but a "Magicman" cluster. Via VNC running seperate WU on individual processors.

However, on the back burner a friend of mine (a Linux Guru) is assisting me on the details on a Linux cluster.

Just bought one from Outpost.

We'll try this one for starters and see if it works with the plan.

so what is the best CPU to get for seti applications?

my fastest Athlon completes Predictor WUs in about 56 mins = 25 per day my P4 3.06+HT takes 150 mins = 19 per day

Hmmm... I've been out of the loop for awhile. Anyone know what is better?

Thanks...

hmmm... what's that athlon?
the P4 I put together overclocked to 3.6ghz (1ghz fsb 1meg cache) was doing about 25 a day - wish my athlon would do that
mine are just 1700+ running at 2.1ghz doing about 10+ Wu / day each
