BenQ fp937 vs. Dell 2001fp

I'm looking to upgrade to a nice lcd in the 19-20" range.

I'm a little concerned about the 16x12 resolution on the Dell. I've got a 6800gt for now, but I don't think I'm going to be able to spend $400 every year on the latest and greatest video card to ensure that I can play all my games at a resolution of 16x12.

This monitor will be used primarily for gaming, but also for email, word, etc.

My budget is in the $400-600 range. I know how much everybody likes the 2001fp, but I was wondering if it is worth the extra $200+ over the BenQ?

Thanks for any input.

The 2001FP will take that BenQ out behind the woodshed and violate it six ways from Sunday.

1) 1280x1024 on a 19" is going to look like ass.
2) If you have to downscale to 1280x1024 to play your games on the 2001FP, it'll still look fine.
3) I don't see any mention of DVI input on the FP937. On a panel that big, DVI or DEATH. :Q

The BenQ does have DVI.

I think I'm gonna just have to sack up and get the Dell. Any more input?

I run my 2001FP just fine at 1152x864 @ 75hz. I just bump up AA and AF to make it look pretty. I ALWAYS use vsync so thats why it run it at 75 hz rather than 60. Either way it seems to default to 75hz when the resolution is that low. It looks and runs great for me.

Does the 2001FP allow you to run a lower resolution with black borders, or does it scale everything up to use all of its pixels? That way, you could run at 12x10 when your video card gets too slow for 16x12, and it'll still look as good as 16x12, just smaller--but not much smaller than the 19" BenQ at the same res.

it can do both, scale or use the pixels. It looks perfect in games at all resolutions however. This monitor is the best monitor I've ever used. The size of it is AWESOME, and the resolution really doesn't look that small because the monitor is HUGE.

The Dell does scale the lower resolutions to be full screen (like all LCD's AFAIK). Also, I'm pretty sure all Dell screens are made by Samsung, and their newer panels have the best scaling in the business. 1024X768 and even 800X600 look great on my 710T (in games, you can't even tell it's being scaled at all); much better than older LCD's - I think the 2001fp is also quite good at scaling.

I thought that Dell used an LG panel? Anyway, jpthomas I have been in the exact same identical situation as you for many weeks now. I mean to the letter. Narrowed down to these 2 LCDs. Was factoring quality, response (gaming performance), good safe vendor (monitorsdirect vs. dell), scaling, and value. Honestly, I today went ahead with the BenQ after much research, here was my thinking.

Both LCDs have mostly glowing user reviews. Both seem great for gaming with low response times. Both have DVI. The things that won me over was $200 cheaper for the BenQ. Having to pay tax if I went for Dell. Some weird 'screen door' effect I hear about on the 2001FP which I don't know if it is on all panels, only some 'defective' ones, or just people's imagination lol. Also, 21 inches may be a little too big being 2 feet in front of my face. Despite the very good scaling you hear about, you hear more often that LCDs in general just perform slightly better at their native resolutions. Because of that, I too didn't want to be pressured to keep games playing at 1600x1200 indefinately (tho I do currently have a 6800 which could). 1280x1024 was too small for me on a 17" but should be better on a 19". The 2001FP is a mature panel, a newer model is bound to come out any time and I'd hate to have the older model months from now.

Anyway, these are some of the things that made me come to my decision on the BenQ. BTW, searching on google for 'FP937s' you get some forum/user reviews on like page 7 or 8 which show some Aussie folks really impressed with the BenQ. Also, the similar yet older (16ms) BenQ gets an average of 5 stars from like 9 reviews on Newegg. The even older (25ms) 951 model also gets an average of 5 stars with like 80+ reviewers so that is more testimony to BenQ quality. Hope this helps. I think both of these panels are near the top of the list for many gamers out there currently...

edit: my panel should arrive by the end of the week, so I'll post my personal opinion on it prolly over the weekend or soon after.
