Hello all.
I just got a dw1640 tuesday 10/11/05, and am having similar problems. I'll try to summerize.

I have a cheapo ECS K7VTA3 V8.0 mobo, VIA KT333 chipset, duron 1.8ghz, 512mb ram. All the latest mobo drivers, OS and nero updates.

The problem started after I installed the drive on it's own channel on my Promise IDE card. It installed fine, and even burned a +R disk. But, when trying to use Nero's drive info tool, it would reboot my computer, I re-installed nero using the provided copy, same thing. I went into the system properties, advanced tab, startup n recovery, and unchecked the automatically restart tab. Then tried it again. On the BSOD, it told me I had a IRQ conflict. So I went into the bios and correctly set it. Same thing happened. So, I took the drive off the Promise card and directly onto the motherboard in place of my cd-rw (undid the bios change)...secondary IDE master(no slaves). Upon reboot, the pc now goes into a reboot loop. Safe mode does not work.

So I decided to try a repair so I could get data off my C drive (using XP pro SP1, benq and HD only)...it goes completely through the 15-20 minute setup, but when booting windows for the 1st time, it re-starts the reboot loop.

Things that I did not do that I will be trying tonight.
1. Mobo bios, and Promise bios updates
2. Removing all PCI cards, and performing a complete fresh XP install using XP Pro SP2.
3. Firmware update on BenQ drive.
4. 2nd BenQ dw1640 drive that was bought in the same order as mine.
