Ordered this from zipzoomfly because of AnandTech.com dvd-rw roundup, got it on tuesday.

Installed, booted up, stuck dvd-r in and the drive acted as if nothing was in there. "Please insert disc" according to nero and dvd decrypter. Same happened with every brand of blank media I tried including cdrs. I tried regular retail dvds and cds and they occasionally read, about 50/50. While doing all of this I heard the dreaded clicking sound that means "dead drive" to me usually but I refused to believe it because it was brand new.

I continued to try swapping IDE cables, swapping into another computer, upgrading firmware. Same result everytime. I called ZipZoomFly and got an RMA number but I have to pay out of my pocket to ship it back, hate that.

This post was mainly to make a record of what happened to me incase it happens to someone else. I know this is a popular drive and I would like to hear from anyone else that has it. I am getting a new one because I still believe I got a bad apple but I am still worried about the lifespan of this drive.
