Benq 1640 primary/secondary channel?

I had a strange problem when I replaced my burner with the benq and could not post.
My pc has 3 harddrives (2 ide, 1 sata), dvdrom, dvd burner. All on cable select and jumpers set accordingly and inspected. SL-k8tpro-939 mb. ATA133 cables used.

After a bit of pain, I found out that the only config that would work was to put the dvd drives on the secondary channel. The original config had the dvd drives were sitting on the primary channel. Anyone having this strange issue?

Another problem is that the oem benq had an major oversight in that the jumper settings were not labeled and I had to fiddle around with the jumper until I figured out the cable select position. Feels pretty light and made in China.

I set every IDE drive including the benq to cable select.

Why should benq not work other than master? Right now its the slave device on the secondary channel. The benq wouldscrew the pc if its on the primary ide channel for some unknown reason.

Master/Slave settings are my only thought. Have you tried setting the BenQ as master/slave manually, and setting the other one accordingly...

I think it didn't matter unless the drive was on the secondary channel.
A newegg reviewer even went so far to say win2k/xp was at fault - "Jumpers set at CS will not install on XP or 2000. It's not the drive".

OS didn't even come to play because the PC failed to post.
