I just got a BenQ 1620 pro 16X DL DVD burner. I loved it, burned several CD's and 4 DVDs. Now I go to install something, it wont read it. I tried a bunch of CD's/DVD's, including original copies of software, won't read any of it. Windows shows the drive, I click on it, it open up but shows nothing there. I don't hear it spin the disc either.

I tried booting to my Windows XP disc, it says "boot from CD:" then wait a few seconds, then boots from the hard drive since it can't find anything. Still no spinning.

Do I gotta RMA this thing or is there anything else I should try first? I've already done a reinstall on the software level. Only thing I haven't tried yet is unplugging it and re-plugging it.

Yep, BIOS and Windows both "see" the drive. I put in a disc, and the green light flashes. It sounds like it is trying to spin, but never gets going. It tries 2-3 times then gives up.

When I click on my F: drive (the DVD-R drive) it opens up a windows showing nothing there--it doesn't prompt me to insert disc, even if one is not there.

I hear the Nvidia IDE driver can be a problem, so I'm gonna switch those. I also might have a bad cable but I don't know cuz it does recognize the drive... Worst case, I gotta RMA it and be without an optical drive for a while (should have kept the CD burner!)

Try uninstalling the hard drive and the ide controller in the device manager and reboot the pc and let windows find the devices.
Have you recently updated the firmware at all ?
