Hibachi is the generic term for that style of cooking. Benihana is a chain hibachi restaurant. It's The Olive Garden to your local Italian place.
But it's always fun. Some chefs are more animated than others, but it's always a good time, especially for first timers.

I thought it was teppan, not hibachi. Hibachi is a small, portable charcol grill. Teppan means "griddle cooked." Although my response is completely based on speculation so I could be way off base.

Hi,
For those of you have has been to Benihana how is it? What type of environment is it and is it worth the money? Is the food good? Do the chefs really cook in front of you? or is it a selected few, and does it cost more?
Thanks!

hibachi = brazier. Teppan is closer to what many are, but regardless in the USA you ask for Teppan and you will get a blank stare...you say Hibachi, many will tell you where a benihana's is![]()

Good food but overpriced. Sushi is decent and tasty but the portions are small and (once again) overpriced. The Teppan is hit-and-miss. Some cooks are better than others, some are funner than others. And the group environment is ideal for groups of about 5-10, so combined with all the above, my opinion is that Benihana is great for work outings where the boss is paying, but (IMO) not so good for dates.
Cooking is done at group tables that seat 10 or more. A party of 2 will usually get seated with a larger party unless the restaurant is empty. Makes for a less than intimate atmosphere.Originally posted by: dquan97
Why wouldn't the place be a good place to go to for a date?
