What is the pros of quad over dual cores? In desktops not servers. Say you want to game...higher clocked dual core or lower clocked quad?

Unless you're specifically playing Crysis, higher clocked dual core.

So other than that when is quad core better?

Basically when you are using software that is optimised for more than 2 simultaneous threads...
Most games are still single threaded, but a dual core can help with the overhead.
I work in the video industry, so quad core (16 core and sometimes 32 core for me actually) is a huge time saver...

Nope, not always. And Quake 4 is from 2005 (wasn't it?), and F.E.A.R. is from last year.

Actually, the non-overclocked numbers are the 2.4 GHz quad vs the 3 GHz dual...
The dual wins on all of them except Lost Planet and Supreme Commander...
The reason these 2 are better on quad is that they have been modified to work with 4 threads simultaneously.

Well, not in gaming... you still need a superior GPU here...

Your frame rate with the overclocked Quad and the fastest NVidia 7000 series GPU will still be about 50% of the similarly clocked Duo with ex. 8800GT.

It also depends on when your next upgrade window will be. If you are planning to keep your machine for a long while to come, quad core will be more "future proof" assuming your quad core doesn't become obsolete by the time developers can fully take advantage of the two extra cores. ;)

Just ask the early adopters of the dual core chips now. They were were "future proofed" but those CPUs are pretty slow now compared to today's standards for a dual core chip...
