Benefits of Win98SE over FE?

I was just wondering what the advantages of upgrading to Windows 98 Second Edition were - is it quicker, more stable, what? Are there any extra features at all?

I don't really want to upgrade to ME yet as I've heard some fairly unfavourable reports about it, and Windows 2000 isn't an option right now. So, SE - what's it like?

Thanks :)

One big advantage is the much improved handling of USB devices.

Also . . . after you install all the Microsoft update files (lots of them) it is an extremely stable OS. But . . . that also depends on how many things you like to run in background. The fewer the better as with any version of Windows.

Advantages of Win98SE over Win98FE:

Internet Connection Sharing......might be good if you have more than one computer.

Better USB support.....I don't think anyone can really prove this.

Internet Explorer 5 (Win98FE has IE4).

DirectX 7 (Win98FE has DirectX 6).

Wider range of more up-to-date device drivers (questionable there).

Various patches.....should be an advantage here.

Thanks guys. Once I install SE, do I just go to the Microsoft site to grab the free updates?

Isnt all the patches and fixes that became se excepts ics availble for download. I would not pay for Se if you already have the first edition.

I would have to agree with Rain. Unless you need ICS, I wouldn't spend any money on getting a SE version. Most updates/patches are available from the windowsupdate website. I've used both FE and SE and did not notice any difference in stability/speed once all updates/patches were applied (upgraded IE, security patches and the rest of the "critical updates"). If you're not paying for the SE version, then why not.
