What are the benefits of always staying current of my drivers? I have the Promise ATA/100 Card as well the as Maxtor card - but what's my benefit in updating the drivers? Faster speed? Thruput?

How about with the Plextor 12x burner? If I go to v1.09? Is that the latest - what ist he benefit? Faster burning??

How about for my ASUS mb? What do I gain by updating the bios?

Or my 3dfx 3000 grafx AGP card? What do I gain by updating the drivers on this??

I am just curious..

The best advice:

If it ain't broken, then don't fix it.

I still use the NV BIOS on my Abit BH6 because there's nothing wrong with it. It recognizes my entire 41GB HD, my processor is supported, and there's just nothing that I need to upgrade for. I use the nVidia 6.35 drivers because they work best on my GeForce2 MX. On the other hand, I flashed my DVD-ROM over the weekend to a new firmware. Why? Because I hate the idiotic region controls in DVDs, and the firmware I upgraded to is region-free.

Go ahead and update the video card drivers - but keep the old ones around. Don't flash the BIOS unless you really really need it..

[Edit - Video card drivers are interesting to experiment with, because they can give you either better or worse frame rates.]

On my Plextor 12x, I'm just using whatever firmware that came with the unit.. no problems so far, so I wouldn't worry about updating it.

Which ASUS mobo do you have? I flashed mine (A7V) yesterday to the version 1007.. gave me some new features in BIOS.. but other than that, nothing major worth cheering about. Apparently it fixes a problem if you have a multimedia card in PCI slots 4/5...

I have the ASUS P2B mobo. I have a P2/300, oc'ed to 466 mhz. Everything works fine in my system including the grafix card, the CDRW (plextor 12x), etc.

The only thing I have been keeping up to date with is my Rio Volt.. but that's for features. I just wondered why people did updates, such as the promise controller card and such..

Most updates I've seen aren't terribly useful... I had to reinstall Windows twice yesterday (revamping my system) cuz the "updated" drivers from the manufacture didn't work properly.. damn thing caused "Windows Protection Error".
