I subscribe to a premium newsgroup server. AFAIK my provider doesnt throttle NNTP traffic. Is there any reason I should be using an SSL connection?

Only your newsgroup provider can see what you download thats the only thing I can think of. Your isp will know your downloading from newsgroup just won't know what it is.

If they wanted to yes, but there is no reason why they'd start watching traffic. If anything they might look at individual customer usage for trottling purposes or to spread heavy users accross different equipment (ex: DSLAMS) but don't think they even do that.

Now if the feds were involved in some kind of investigation then that's a different story I suppose. They can plug a hub at the DSLAM on your port, then have a separate PC sniffing out all the traffic.
