Benefit of upgrading RAM in a Printer?

Specifically the Brother HL-1440. It comes w/ 2MB and is expandable to 34MB, and I want to know if there's really any benefit in doing so?

TIA 🙂

I'm assuming that is a laser printer (I'm too lazy to look it up). So these comments are focused on laser printers.

A laser printer must print an entire page at once (where a dot matrix or inkjet can print one line at a time). Thus your entire page must be kept in memory. For plain text, this isn't a problem. But if you print something complex the printer cannot handle it if it runs out of memory. The result is that it prints some of the page on one paper and the rest on the next sheet of paper - which is usually unacceptable.

I once had a laser with 1 MB memory and I couldn't print any school related papers. I had complex pictures or Word documents with several Excel graphs. These took up more than 1 MB on several pages and I had to upgrade the printer's memory to print correctly.

One solution is to print with lower resolution. If something fails at 600 dpi, it will likely work at 300 dpi - but then the quality goes out the window.

I myself would never settle for a cheap laser again (and 2MB wouldn't cut it for my needs). I now have a new laser with 8MB. If you never see partially printed pages, then 2MB is plenty for you.

dullard pretty much has it covered, if it runs out of rendering room you'll get a partial page - Neatly cut off in a perfectly straight line.

Dropping the resolution will usually work around it, since halving the resolution quarters the necessary memory.

Other than that, you won't see any benefit.

Excellent, thanks alot guys 🙂

I found a 32mb SIMM in FS/T for $14 shipped, so I PM'd the guy and will probably be picking that up just to be safe 😀

you need to put more ram into HL-1440 in order to print at max dpi (see the manual).
and more ram = faster.

It hasn't arrived yet, but thanks for letting me know 😀
