Benefit of higher ohms

I was looking at car subwoofers and was wondering why would they make subs with higher resistance when with a lower resistance sub you could get the same wattage with a much cheaper amp. So I figure their has to be some benefit to using a higher resistance subwoofer. Anyone know?

Solid state amps don't like low resistance speakers.

Also, speaker resistance is not a static thing, it varies with frequency.
Using a higher resistance speaker is just a safer way to go.

It's for people who want multiple subs. 2 4ohm speakers wired in parallel gives you a 2 ohm load.

What he said. Also many of the subs that come today have dual voice coils as well which makes them like two speakers in one. You can wire two 4 ohm voice coils in paralell and end up with 2 ohms.

Alot of speakers come in different ohmage for how you hook them up even at the same price.

Infinity I know comes with some with a switch to set ohmage

And also so that when the stock Bose stereo in your car goes, you have to go to bose to get a replacement head unit at some insanely high cost and/or buy idiotic convertors to go to each speaker first.

A higher resistance speaker will draw less current from the amp at a given voltage setting.
It is an easier load to drive for the amplifier. But won't be as loud.

Interesting. I just picked up an Alpine Type-R. Gonna run it with a kenwood amp I got from a friend. It puts out 400w at 4ohms and 800w at 2ohms. Because the sub has a 500w Rms I went with the 2ohm+2ohm that ill wire for 4 ohms. What do you guys think of the Type-R?

Never heard one, but looks nice. Cast aluminum frame, rubber surround and Kevlar reinforced cone. Should be a winner. Please use a sealed box.

I loved mine too, but that amp got HOT.

I had it driving 2 Kappa Perfect 12DVQ's and they would hammer along with some killer sq.

Tighter bass with a sealed box. More loudness with a ported box, but less tight and uncontrolled below resonance. With modern amplifiers, power is not a problem so you won't need the extra volume of the ported box. Also, port tuning is tricky and the sealed box volume isn't even critcal, much more room for error with sealed-without adversely affecting sound.

NICE subs. I haven't actually noticed mine getting particularly hot. I'm going to check that next time I've had it running for 15 minutes or so. What you have now?

Just bought a brand new car so I haven't had time to fool around yet, but I'm thinking about going with a full on DynAudio/JL system. JL 13TW5 and the 3 way Dyn stuff. Not sure what amps I'll use this time around. Size is going to matter so I may be going with the PDX line up again.

In my truck (crew cab) I had Kappa Perfect 6.1's all the way around running on an Alpine PDX setup, and the two Kappa Perfect 12DVQ's in a sealed box that replaced my center console (in front and back) off the 1211a. Sounded excellent for the bass it made.

One more question lets say im getting new interior speakers and an amp, I buy a 4 channel amp the puts out 100wx4, which matches the rms of my speakers. How would i go about hooking up a pair of 3.5 inch dash speakers that only handle about 25rms.

Do you have 4 x 100watt rms speakers, or 2x 100 watt and 2x 25 watt?

Assuming the latter, cheapest option is to just turn the gain way down and make sure their is not distortion. Both your doors and dash speakers should distort at around the same volume level, so adjust accordingly.

It would be 4 100watt speakers and the 2 25 watt dash speakers.
