Benchmarks of R600

Gotta get my new build finished and I was kinda hoping to see some benchmarks for R600 to see if it'd be worth buying a hold over card or if I should just get the 8800GTX (because it's plenty fast anyway). Does anyone expect to see some benchmarks for this card in the next 10 days?

Maybe not within the next 10 days but probably next month, I'd say.

Remember, *approximately* every 6 months, NVIDIA comes out with a new card. So...

By the time the R600 comes out, you *should* have more choices.

Aren't the hard drives a little bit of overkill?

why wait? ... if you need it now, buy it now. :p

we know for SURE faster than the GTX is coming ... whether x2900 or 8900gtx ...

the prices on the GTX are stable ... for awhile ... and it is a great card that should keep you very happy ... much faster than anything else currently available

but ... your call

EDIT: a LOT depends on your current card and what resolution you game at. If it's 12x10 and you currently have a x1900xtx ... you can afford to wait [for example] ... no games are really *pushing* it at that low res.

4x400GB Seagate 7200.10s?

Overkill?
How much storage you need?
Oh yea, you have the raptor too.

You better be running those 4 drives in RAID5...

Anyway, it's gonna be a few months before we see anything definitive about the R600 (i too am eager to see how it performs).
I don't trust that one site that posted the benchmarks. Probably fake (hell, if they break the NDA, why not just go all out and post the dam pics of the card :p)

So, what monitor you have (what resolution you gonna run at)?
And I'd say if you have the $$$ to get everything else in that rig, then why not just go all out now. Get an 8800GTX.
The drivers are finally starting to slightly mature a bit (97.92 release) but they are no where near fixed yet (although I haven't encountered a lot of these problems.)

This is a completely new system. My current one is a P4 3.06 (rev. B), 1GB of PC-1066 RDRAM, X850XT (AGP), a pair of 120GB WD HDs (with a bunch of externals), an Audigy Platinum eX and various other things. I bought a Dell 2407 earlier this year and well, the X850XT tries very hard...but yeah.

I picked up those Seagates during the Frys Grand Opening for $99 each (Haven't decided to run them in RAID-5 yet because as it stands I have no replacement drive on hand to swap out if one fails). I certainly don't need quite that much storage yet, but I use about half of that presently and they were an incredibly good deal.

I probably am going to get the 8800GTX and call it good, but I was just hoping that I wouldn't have buyer's remorse so badly if the R600 does much better (as opposed to knowing in advance of my purchase how it would perform).

that's what i'd do ... the GTX is a powerful card at a decent price

remorse? ... think how much you will have if you keep the x850xt ... wait a month and then find out the r600 isn't any [or much] better than the GTX.

the "worst" can happen and you simply sell your 8800GTX for a small *loss* ... or 'tough it out' until your next upgrade ...

i feel for you

:D

nice rig

Ok, so then there's my next question.

eVGA? PNY? MSI?

:)

The step up program is appealing, aside from the "send your card before we send you a new one" part. Otherwise does it just come down to price?

Decent RAID5 requires more money (for a decent RAID card), otherwise you're just as well off running them independently, as JBOD, or even 4 drive RAID 0 or perhaps 2 x 2 drive RAID 0. And if you simply cannot fathom needing so much space perhaps you haven't considered RAID0+1. If you're using a motherboard's onbaord RAID you might not have access to RAID5, and even if you do it might not be better off than an option involving RAID1.

I have 4 drives, 320GB 7200.10s, in pairs of RAID 0... ~1.2TB of space and I still have to watch myself - HD and other video/media content quickly consumes hard drive space.

Even if the R600 is significantly faster when it comes out, there's no telling WHEN it'll come out. ATI hasn't exactly been the best at hitting their original launch date lately. You could end up waiting quite a while for it.

It takes a lot to make an 8800GTX sweat hard. I don't think you'll be unhappy with it, even if ATI eventually comes out with something faster.

EVGA 8800GTX is great. The EVGA motherboard has flaws. You cannot overclock the qx6700 on it. Check the message boards @ EVGA, there are plenty complaining.

Good to know, seems the community is hounding eVGA to find a solution. We shall soon see =)

Yap, it's annoying. I can't pass the 300mhz FSB no matter what. Problem is that many say it's going to be a board revision to fix this issue, but that would be so over hand. Imagine thousands of people havind to take apart their computers to fix the overclocking issue. A BIOS update to fix the issue would be most welcome.
About the video card, get the EVGA 8800GTX and step up when 8900GTX comes out.
Thanks

Whether or not you should upgrade is based on how you feel about your current computer. Don't upgrade based on what's coming, upgrade based on what you have.

Are you happy enough with your current system? If you are, don't upgrade until you need to, then buy whatever is available. If you're not, then upgrade. There's always something coming around the corner in the PC world, you can't stop that.

If you plan to get the 8800, I'd also recommend the eVGA. They have a good reputation for customer support, a lifetime warranty, and you can OC to your hearts content and not void the warranty.

Well everything in my signature is already purchased so the upgrade is happening ;) It's just a matter of deciding which. I think I'm pretty set on the eVGA 8800GTX, now I need to decide on the motherboard :)
