Benchmarking

I've recently had an idea, and want to try it out. It involves benchmarking some things.

So what would you consider the best ways to benchmark video results.
I have RTCW now, and plan on using that. I'm guessing quake 3 too. 3dmark2k1. Also, how do you benchmark properly, exactly how do you get your numbers, I think quake has a program that lets you do it, but I'm not sure.

Any other programs are appreciated. Thinking of a variety of games (which I have to be able to download to test) Maybe some CAD benchmarking too, if that is possible.

I like to use the old origional Q3 Demo: Hit tilde key, in console type:" timedemo 1" hit enter, tilde key again to remove console and select: Demo 001
after it's finished, hit the tilde key again to check the final score in the console.
As long as you don't leave the game, you can change settings, and run the demo again. But once you do, you have to re-type the "timedemo 1" command in the console.

Leaving sound on will lower your score, some sites leave sound on, some don't, when testing.

I downloaded the q3 demo, and I'm assuming you type this in at the intro screen, where you choose the options. I type in demo 001 and it doesn't do anything. timedemo 1 goes in fine.
If I do it during play, it says its cheat prohibited.

this is what u do,

- hit the "~" tilda key and then type "timedemo 1" hit enter
- next type "demo demo001.dm3" ( the 0's in demo("001").dm3 are the number zero)
after typing "demo demo001.dm3" hit enter and it should start up a self played game that will run as fast as it can.
- once the demo is done hit the "~" tilda key again and it should show you the FPS at the bottom of console window.

ah, that worked. 9.1s doesn't seem much for a test.
even at 1600 res its 14s, and my monitor doesn't support it.

I tried RTCW, but when you enter timedemo 1, it says that it can't find the map, and when you try it under the single player, its cheat prohibited.

Are there any non 3d shooters that can be benchmarked?

RTCW does not include the checkpoint demo. You have to download it. Do a Google search on it. For UT, you can also use UTbench and Thunder. Those demos have to also be downloaded.
