i'm getting some odd goings on in my comp and wanted to know if there is a benchmarking/strees test i could run that would tell me if it's the ram or something else that is causing problems. i've been running prime95 with no problems, but sometimes when i'm running norton speed disk, the comp will reboot by itself. any ideas?

Norton Speedisk stresses the drive as well as the CPU quite a bit - CPU because (I assume) you're using an IDE-HDD.

Might be a power-issue - your PSU is undersized or going bad. Try & borrow a decent PSU (300W minimum) & see what that does for you :).

Hope this helps :).

it is a 300w psu. can this kind of problem be caused by bad ram? i bought a cheap 256mb stick (micron chips, but don't know the actual brand of the stick). or a bad drive? bought a 60gxp 40gig and comp reboots when that's being gone over with speed disk. it's stable during everything else. games run fine, although the comp locks when i'm running ati tv with certain other programs. i've run sandra many times without any problems, all of the benchmarking tests on it.

speed disk is similar to defrag, right? if not, ignore the rest of my babbling...

the norton problem may result from a conflict with something else that is running. close your applications, hit ctrl-alt-del and check other background programs, check the system tray, run a free (?) program called "enditall" to confirm that non-essentials arent running. also, disable the screen saver and any power management features like drive powerdowns.

as for any other problems...what else is going wrong, besides norton. could be time for a re-install; when's the last time you defragged succesfully, scandisked, re-installed, whatever.

good luck

after it reboots, i can run scandisk and it'll be fine. seems to be almost every other time i run it. nothing else is really failing. been running prime95 without problems for almost 24 hours now. but since that is almost all cpu, i don't think that's what i'm looking for. i'm at work right now, but when i get home i'm going to run a few real tests on the ram from dos. i had just clean installed win98 about two weeks ago, and haven't put any weird progs or anything on it. nothing is overclocked either.
