I heard that before. Will this affect power consumption too?
the driver had zero impact on my max turbo speeds.

and their speed only went up to 1019 from 1006 so hopefully that extra half watt of power consumption will not cause too much worry...

It raised the temp and power targets, IIRC. The max boost might not have changed by much, but it's likely the avg. boost increased as well. It might have only been a couple of three percent, but in graphs posted on the web, fanboys can turn that into, "The Best Performance Drivers Ever!"

again it changed nothing on my end related to boost. the only game where I had a performance increase would not have been impacted by more boost anyway as it was cpu limited which is what the driver actually addressed.

(3) The R9 290 doesn't use nearly as much power as I thought it would based on reviews - it's actually fairly efficient, as long as you don't touch the voltage.
(4) Performance is fantastic, but it's very game-dependent. When people say "OMG, the R9 290 beats an OC'd 780 Ti!", you have to take it with a grain of salt. Overall, the OC'd R9 290 does in fact match a stock 780 Ti, but so does an OC'd 780. Now, I only took my 290 to 1100MHz (a 16% OC over reference 290s), but the voltage required to go much above that means only certain users will be interested in tapping that 780 Ti-beating performance. And the 780 Ti actually overclocks better. :)

I have a 3770K and a GTX 780 TI, wanna compare bench marks?

Termie: Great job. Based upon your reviews of this card I picked up a used Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X( excellent shape AND price) to replace the PNY GTX680 in my AMD 8350 rig (Asus Sabertooth 990FX mb + 8350 @ 4.6ghz). The Tri-X is a robust card that really performs well.

I have a 3770k rig with 2 GTX670 FTWS in SLI. I could also take them out and run the Sapphire R9-290 Trix-X I picked up for my 8350 rig.

What benchies do you want to run?

What is your cpu clocked at and what monitor are you using?:)

Nice write-up T. The sweet spot for my Tri-X (gaming o/c) is +150mV 1200 core 1600 memory. Give her some more juice and watch her fly! :)

I'm rebuilding my benching rig and will definitely give this a try when it's back together. Thanks for the tip!

What are your temps at that voltage? I know the power draw is going to be pretty high...

Just a quick update here - built up the new rig and bumped voltage up by +100mV (the limit in Afterburner). Runs nicely at 1150/1500, added about 5-6% in 3DMark, so it seems there was indeed more on tap here. Still not as fast as my OC'd 780Ti, but it would beat my OC'd 780 easily. Might try Trixx to see if there's still some more voltage I can apply.

This thing is really the deal of the decade...

Pretty amazing card since it doesn't sacrifice temperatures or noise levels even when overclocked. Looks like Sapphire really improved the heat sink from 7970 days, only wish they upgraded the fans too. For $370 new, this card is a steal. I mean for $740 for 2, it is not much more expensive than the 780Ti! Can't wait for AMD to keep pushing the die size beyond 438mm2. If they manage 470mm2 on 20nm, it should be a nice boost from R9 290X.

Now we're talking, stretch it's legs that bit more and see what it still has, if anything. :)

It seems to be on sale again too.

Wow nice temps for that card, my zotac 770 with its amp cooler and stock clocks can get above 73c and that is with a 75% fanspeed. Beast of a cooler or some killer low ambient temperatures?

Thanks! re: ambient temps --- My setup is located in a bonus room over the garage which is typically the hottest room in the house. I keep the hallway thermostat set at 74, but it's probably 75/76 in the bonus room. My son tends to heat the room up a lil bit too w/ his jumping around / playing Wii-U, PS3, etc. :)

It seems Sapphire continually make positive changes to their coolers and also made even another change by adding a copper heat spreader w/Vapor chamber to the recent 290 Vapor X release. I am also happy with their cooler and this card as you guys above are, no doubt.

For the 290 Tri-X OC Sapphire is using a slightly different variation of their Tri-X cooler than what we saw on the 280X Toxic. The variably sized 80mm/90mm fans are gone in favor of a trio of equally sized 85mm fans, maintaining the triple fan design of the Tri-X while ever so slightly changing the airflow and aesthetics.
