I want to get an idea of how well my hardware performs compared to the various products reviewed on this web site, but I don't want to spend any money for benchmarking software. I'm mostly interested in gaming, and I noticed that Serious Sam 2 has been used a number of times as a 3D gaming benchmark.
So I downloaded a free demo of SS2 and figured out how to run the benchmark utility (actually there's two - one gives you frames per second, the other gives more technical information), but I don't know how these numbers translate to what is presented on AnandTech as a single number. For example, the Athlon 2800 scored a 156.0 in a recent test, but 156.0 whats? What is the unit for these benchmark results? If they are only relative indicators, what system configuration are they measured against? Basically, I want to know how I can translate my own system's benchmark results into the scale used by AnandTech.
