I don't care if FF Java is 50% faster or whatever, because honestly it takes a few seconds for a page to load and what is a millisecond difference in Java tests?

For me:

IE8 > FF

(that's all I've used since Netscape days and those don't count anymore)

So basically IE > FF because you're ignorant. FF is king because of its addons. Noscript = That doesnt happen. If you want the fresh default web experience, you could of just turned off pop-up blocked while you were at it.

Firefox would be cool if it didn't slow down a whole pc sometimes. I been trying to figure out what is causing this issue on one system but not the other. Still haven't figured it out yet. Both have very different hardware but one does have a nvidia video card and the other does not.

Have no idea if it is even firefox causing it but opera runs great on the system having the problem but I prefer firefox! I know when it happens cpu usage is very high and firefox memory usage is well over 800 MB + in 12 hours to 1 day.

Yeah. I will try just testing the plain firefox to see what happens on the pc. Really sucks because whats the point of using firefox if a plugin or addon causes this?

Well when someone who has a clue how to program designs the plugin, they check for memory leaks before they release it ;) - They also optimize for memory and performance.

If you use some of the smaller plugins, you never know how they are going to turn out.

You get redirected just by loading the page?? What kind of sites are you going to!?!?

Given that:
A. You shouldn't be going to sites with auto-redirects on them as they are a breeding ground for spyware/adware
B. I find it really hard to believe that you aren't accidentally clicking on something. Regardless of the browser, that shouldn't be happening at normal sites.
C. You should really run HijackThis and run some malicious software removal tests - it sounds like malicious software might have already found its way onto your PC.

-Kevin

It was www.imeem.com. I used to listen to a playlist while I worked, the screen was minimized. One second I'm listening to music, half way through a song (or whenever) it would be telling me about a ford escape and I load it up and I'm on a completely different website. I also have Kaspersky on the computer.

While I could load lots of plugins, this was a test on default FF. My work's security policy does not allow me to run plugins or extra programs (or even beta software)... I had to judge based on stock. And the results are... Well. Not good for Firefox.

Yep I'm ignorant. /boggle. Its absolutely obsurd to think that a Microsoft browser could actually be more safe than a competitor! Maybe you should check yourself into a psychologist to figure out why you have brand loyalty. Because you shouldn't. :)

I use both. I don't care much for the extra milliseconds worth of speed. (IE8 at home, FireFox at work) Who cares, it's really irrelevant at this point, it's just personal preference.

Try it and see for yourself. It's faster than Firefox, but I don't care for it. It's ugly, and stripped. It also has small issues here and there, but those should get worked out as it matures.

Honestly, when starting up firefox, I never thought, "Wow that's slow." It always opens in a decent amount of time. I really don't feel like losing any productivity when one browser may take 2 seconds longer to load. Big deal.

That said... all these browser speed tests make little sense to me. For years and years, Opera was always called the fastest web browser... so I tried it, and I really didn't notice much of a difference (I'd be lying if I said I did). Same with Google chrome - didn't notice an appreciable difference. Yes, benchmarks may say it renders pages faster... yadda yadda yadda. But to me a second here and a second there really makes no difference to me, especially when I'm browsing many different sites.

For now, I'll stick with Firefox. I much prefer having the ability to customize my browser to suit my needs. I don't run a lot of extensions, but the ones that I do, I don't think I could live without. (I'm trying to switch to Safari on the mac, but the functionality difference between my customized Firefox and Safari is pushing that effort aside.)

2 seconds is *HUGE* to me. I still need to make a keyboard shortcut to open Chrome, but it's basically open before my finger is done pulling off of the mouse button. F6, address, control-enter. Bam, website. I could be reading the news already by the time your crummy FireFox finally gets off its lazy ass and decides to launch! :p

Using the one one thousand counting method :^P, it took me 7" to fully load Firefox with 17 tabs, many of which contain images. Now that it's loaded it works very fast, and I can start an FTP session, download videos from YouTube, or just screw around and change my theme. Can you do that in Chrome? ;^)

I don't have or need themes in Chrome. Because they're all separate .exe's, I can have 50 tabs open in one browser (I usually have 9) and they'll all load just as fast as one single tab.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

I just tried it with Chrome, and it took 6" to start and load 17 tabs. Considering my imprecise measuring method, it virtually the same as Firefox.

Then it's something wrong with your computer ;)

Either way, it's still faster than FF, by your own admission. Chrome > FF because it's more stable, MUCH easier to recover a bad tab (you don't have to close the entire stupid thing), isn't bloated with stupid shit like themes (because I prefer, you know, websites taking up my browser realestate not some damned pretty colors), and can block ads (check the software forum).

Chrome = WIN

I've had more total lockups in the short time I've used Chrome than I've had from Firefox since V0.7

I have not had one single lockup either in the browser or my computer as a whole while using or having installed Chrome. In fact, I got a new mobo/cpu recently and installed Chrome as soon as the Windows updates were done. The only problem I have I think is power supply related, but that's it. I think I've seen a dead tab all of three or four times since Chrome came out and it's so easy to fix by closing the tab, making a new one, and reloading the site that I'm not even sure how few broken tabs I've seen.

Please fix your computer.

Most of the people here would be lucky to have a machine as solid as mine. I reboot when I decide to reboot it. I'm currently on 5 days of up time, and it's not unusual for me to go a couple of months without rebooting ;^)

Blah blah blah, you just said that installing something as simple as a web browser was crashing your box. That's not stable at all. 5 days up? Five WHOLE days? Wow, I'm impressed.

:p

Who cares if your computer can stay on for months at a time or not? A tiny web browser brought your hulking beast to it's knees. Nub. ;)

Look n00b, I assumed I was talking to someone educated, I guess I need to spell it out for you. The BROWSER became unresponsive, not my COMPUTER. Is there anything /else/ you need clarification on?

There is a browser called Iron that people should have a look at .
Basically it is a group of people that took the source to Chrome and stripped out all the google tracking and reporting stuff. They also upgraded the web kit engine and multimedia support. It is VERY fast.I really was surprised how fast it was and how well it worked , even faster than Chrome.

http://www.srware.net/en/softw...ron_chrome_vs_iron.php

They also have a portable version for use on usb drives.

Well obviously there's something wrong with your computer. Maybe Chrome got borked during install because, you know, there's something wrong with your computer that wouldn't let it install correctly. Or maybe something about Chrome got corrupted post-install because there's something wrong with your computer.

It works flawlessly on mine so it not working on yours is a problem with your computer. If it were indeed a browser problem, I would experience the same error. Which I'm not.

...because there's something wrong with your computer. ;)
