This is primarily directed at the more experienced lifters on the board.

I am planning to buy a weight belt and some chalk online. I've had Inzer belts recommended to me, and if at this stage in my training it is that important to buy a top-quality belt I will do so. However, if I can avoid spending $70 on a belt I would of course like to do that.

These are the ones I've been considering:

Inzer Forever Belt

Inzer economy belt

bodybuilding.com leather 4" belt

elitefts power belt

All these stores have chalk available too so that isn't really a deciding factor. I have a feeling the BB.com one won't quite cut it, but I really know almost nothing about belts.

Thanks in advance.

Drew, do you find the double prong buckle difficult to deal with? I've heard single prong is better, but you know how people blow things out of proportion.

I can see why single prong would be easier to remove, but I really haven't had a problem with it. Just suck in and pull hard.

When you ordered it, did it take long? I've heard stories of 6 week waiting times.

Double prong belts offer no advantage over single prong belts. They just take longer to get on and off. I prefer lever belts.

Inzer and EliteFTS have good quality belts. If you order an unusual color, it will take longer. Black is generally the most likely color to be in stock. You might prefer a 10mm belt instead of a 13mm. The 13mm belts are much stiffer. Don't bother with any of the tapered belts.

You really should try to use a belt as little as possible. I generally only use it if I'm squatting or deadlifting with 85%+ of my 1RM.

I do plan on a 10mm, 13mm seems way too stiff for me based on what I've read. And I remember reading in SS that tapered belts serve no purpose.

I will keep in mind to not use it too much. I don't want to become dependent on it.

A blackbelt in brazilian jiu-jitsu would probably be more effective :p

Also, paul, do you plan on using this belt every time you do squats/DL's or just when you're lifting heavy?

a $70 belt will last years - you probably won't have to buy another one.

i'm an Inzer fanboi & use their lever belts.
their buckle belts are used widely amongst powerlifters, too.

See my post above yours. Just on max days or really heavy sets.

Spamela, that's what I'm trying to weigh. I'm leaning towards the Inzer economy belt as a decent compromise between the forever belt and the cheap BB.com one.

BTW, you look effortless in that lift in your sig!

What is your ultimate goal? You state at this stage, do you intend to compete in the future? I initially had the economy belt because of lack of funds but got the top of the line one later. Big difference. My philosophy on things has changed over the years. I used to go as cheap as possible but when I continually upgraded, I spent more money than if I bought something good in the first place. I would just go with the better one. It's not that much more. Also stick with single prong.

Ultimate goal? I'm not sure. My goals for 2008 are to bench 225 and squat 315 for 3 sets of 5 reps each, deadlift 405 for 1 set of 5 reps, and to have a 1rm total of 1000 or more. I like lifting, for me it is both a means and an end, so I'm not necessarily training to participate in any powerlifting events any time soon. There are no powerlifting gyms in my area so I'm not sure if Indiana even holds PL meets.

I still haven't ordered. If the Inzer economy belt came with single prong I would've ordered it already but it doesn't. I did some researching and it seems there is no set thickness for that belt, and that sometimes it comes as 10 mm, sometimes as thick as 13. I really don't want a 13mm belt, and further that makes it sound like they outsource the making of that belt and just slap their name on it. I may just get the Inzer forever belt and be done with it. My only concern is that when I lose weight I'll have to get another belt, but I guess I can just drill new holes at that point.

The 13mm belt is pretty stiff and takes a while to get used to it. I would call Inzer and see if they can make it with couple of extra hole and what size would be the best fit for you now and what would fit you in the future.

HouseOfPain has a good selection:

I absolutely love the Inzer True Black Wrist Wraps (so much better than wraps from local sports shops):

Stiff feel, excellent velcro straps and a lot of wrap to support your wrist.

I considered ordering from them to get around the possibility of waiting forever for my belt, but since you can order them directly from Inzer for $10 less I just decided to do that.
