I have a 2007 Odyssey that over the past couple of days has been making a high-pitched whining noise. Almost like the sound that they use for "electric cars" in the future in crappy TV/movies.

Anyways, I planned on taking it in TOMORROW, and I was just driving it to the store when the car started to sputter... then the dash idiot-lights lit up like a Christmas tree (ABS, alarms, door ajar etc). I quickly turned off the main road started to head home getting 5-6 blocks when it died on me. Tried to restart and it wouldn't turn over -- much like the battery was dead (new battery in car less than 6 months ago)

I sat and looked for the towing card but figured I'd try to turn it over one more time and it started up. Dash was still lit-up. I had VERY little power in reverse though and certainly sluggish in drive as well. I got it home and headlights and cabin lights were certainly dimmer than normal.

I have a charger on the batter right now, but I wanted to post here and basically give the run down. Do you think it's just the belt and the alternator isn't working? and the battery just got sucked down over the past few days? OR something worse?

OH! My wife DID mention that today while driving the batter light did go on/off a few times as she used the car today.

Thanks in advance.

Is the belt still on the car or did it break? Look at the alt and belt to see if anything stands out. Could be the belt/tensioner broke or the Alternator went out.

You should have stopped driving the second all the lights came on. By driving more you can damage the motor much more greatly.

Belt is still on and spinning. In fact I just started it up and moved it into road. I have tow truck coming to take to service station. I guess I will find out more in the morning.

It's pitch black here so it's hard to see anything out of the normal at this point.

Alternator sounds questionable to me.

Easy way to tell... Pull the belt and spin each accessory pulley and idler pulley by hand. They shouldn't feel like rocks inside when you spin them.

The whine may not be a bearing, but the electrical AC whine from a bad diode.

Or a vacuum leak.

Well that wouldn't explain the loss/low electrical, battery light etc though. But I'm telling you when I put it in reverse, I practically had to FLOOR it to get it to move.

But after I got it home and into the driveway, then subsequently moved it out of the driveway -- in reverse -- it seemed to drive OK?

No idea what is going on here.

*sigh*

Just got call...

Alternator
Tensioner
Belt
Battery

$1200

Shoot me.

that sounds really high - everything there should be easily accessible, i don't think any special tools are involved.

maybe $300 for the best alternator ever including pulley and you don't return the core
$100 for the tensioner
$25 belt
$100 for the battery

Well... yeah. But you didn't include labor and diagnostic charges.
I think you're low on the prices too (except the alternator)

Trust me, if this were summer I'd most likely be doing this all myself. Being winter in WI and having a 1 car garage, I have no way of getting this done myself and we're a 1 car family in the winter, so right now we're a 0 car family.

In closing, shoot me.

Tensioner is the only thing that may have wiggle room in price by PottedMeat.

Battery $$ you can check with Sears/AutoZone etc.
Belt may vary - again check.

If this is being done by a dealer; then the price may be about there - rip off on labor charge and parts. (30-50% markup)

However as you you say, they have you over a barrel at this point. Lube up

Deed already done. It wasn't as bad as you'd think. There was hugging and kissing.
