is it possible to switch between the "shift states" without alt tabbing out of the program you are in? if so....how is it done?
It seems from wat ive read u can only do it by using the program that comes with it. But i dont see how that makes sense. is the D-pad configurable? or is it used specifically only as a directional pad? orange button.....wat is it? just another button or does it have a special purpose? switching states perhaps? is the button under the d-pad configurable? or is it locked as a spacebar? keep in mind these questions r coming from a potential buyer. I was wondering if it would fit in with my playstyle in games such as wow and css. thx for the help in advance.

If you go into the Profile Editor, and go down to the shift key, you'll see that you can program a single key, a macro, OR use it to toggle states either momentary (while pressed) or as a toggle switch. That can be a different state for each of the 3 colors. The orange button can be used as a single button, a macro, a mouse button, or a DirectX Input button. Each press on the D-pad is the same....of course you can program NULL values into anything, therefore the DPad can be 4 way or 8 way.

if you're considering buying the Nostromo, stop considering and buy. If you're confused about programming it, it will take a bit of time but it's not hard once it 'clicks' as to what it's doing.

counterstrike source?

Sorry don't play that, but I have worked with Half-Life 2.

Realize that you can play around with the keys by configuring them in the game itself, then configuring the Nostromo with the customized commands. If you do this, I do recommend a screenprint to file away, because if you reinstall the game it will be easier to reset the keystrokes. Otherwise you'll forget and will be re-inventing the wheel.

Heinrich has given you some good skinny on the N52. I use my N52 for ALL my games that are configurable within a game, My games are ; Graw, GR 1, HL2, all the COD series, fear, Q4, Doom, Farcry, ect. The only glitch I have noticed is that on a RARE occasion a game profile will not be picked up when I execute any given game [ the problem is not game specific ], this problem may be limited to my system only, and a simple re-boot always is the fix. Aside from that my N52 is an integral part of my gaming hardware. Once you get it setup and a little stick time under your belt, you will be satisfied with your purchase. I do keep a diagram of my key assignments for the N52 in plain view, just incase I want to make a change for a new game. Good luck with your new toy.
