i am trying to help a neighbor connect to our network, and i have my router set up to hide SSID and use WPA-PSK.

now, I installed the drivers for the Belkin F5D9010 on his laptop (Dell Inspiron 9300), but whenever the installer finishes, the installshield window just kinda stays there and goes non responding. I have tried numerous uninstalls and reinstalls, same thing each time. I am wondering if this is why the card cannot connect to the network. The settings are all what they should be in the Windows Wireless Network configuration window.
I am confused as to why this is not working. My computer in my room is connected by wireless, and its working fine (on it right now).

I am currently using the Linksys WRT54GX2 as the router. He had bought the Netgear RangeMax WPN824, but we returned it for the Linksys. I am already debating if that was a smart decision and may return the Netgear, as in my home, I was getting 22mbps (a regular 54g linksys connector in this computer). The linksys wasn't even getting 16. I find it curious that its that slow anyway. But whatever I guess. But I'd rather the Netgear for that reason only. But I dont know the range of the netgear, but the geeksquad guy at bestbuy says he swears by it. again, whatever. who listens to bestbuy employees, right? lol
he claims it has worked best in all the installs he has done. that is possible.

i am wondering, is it even going to be possible to get the network connection to my neighbors house? His internal 54g Intel wifi chip picked up the signal, but Windows said it was low signal and had a 1 or 2mbps connection. Will a MIMO notebook card change that and help offer a faster connection to his laptop? I'd say between where the router is, and his home, there is maybe 100ft, IF that. I doubt its that much. But there are maybe 6 walls, plus the space between the houses. is this too much in the way of obstacles?
I am trying to get him at least 5mbps. If possible. And a steady connection, I dont want it dropping him.

thanks

First, make sure that the Drivers are correctly install and his Network his configured.

In General, you can debug the Network Settings of a computer by following these steps.

Step One. Check the Network parameters in the Computer?s Device Manager. Make sure that the drivers are installed correctly; there is No IRQ conflict, and No Ghost installation. http://www.ezlan.net/faq#ghost

Step Two Verify Basic network setting in the OS: http://www.ezlan.net/Installing#verify
If the above two Steps indicates that every thing looks good but functionally it does not work.

Step Three. Check (and repair if necessary) the Socket Layers, Winsock, and or refresh the TCP/IP Stack. http://www.ezlan.net/clean#refreshnet
If need to Reinstall; Log to this page it have a lot of links to instructions for Windows Network Installation - http://www.ezlan.net/Installing.html

Switch ON SSID and switch Off the security.

His computer should be able to connect via Windows Zero Configuration.

When he has a connection connected than Switch on security and configure his computer with the same security parameters.

If it works OK after you turn on the security, you can try to play with the SSID (which is a waste of time to switch off to begin with http://www.ezlan.net/faq#ssid).

well no conflicts, driver is said to be ok, and parameters the same as the internal wireless card.
but at pointblank range, the belkin card gets no signal. i think the installer/drivers are fck'd up. damn belkin, figures
not to mention that the mouse will lock up for very short moments as you move it across the screen (not even for a second though).. and the windows loading and shutdown sounds now suffer the same symptom, where they lock up for very short moments.
what the hell, is windows, dell, and belkin not playing nice together?
:sigh:

although the internal card would lose the signal sometimes too. hmm
think the linksys wrt54gx2 is also trash... should listened to the bestbuy guy
