Belkin Desktop Wireless G NIC

I have an issue with a Belkin Desktop Wireless G NIC that is having connection issues.

Yesterday my computer lost connectivity as indicated by the Belkin Wireless Utility (turns red from green when no connection) and the windows wireless network connection icon. Both indicators are in the sys tray.

After reboot, the computer was still unable to establish connection to the D-Link Wireless router (DI-624).

I have a laptop that uses a usb D-link wireless card without any issues therefore don't suspect the router. The desktop connection has been reliable for the last 2 weeks without any changes to the physical location of the devices or any configuration changes to the os or utility software. It just stopped working.

I therefore decided to uninstall all hardware and software associated with Belkin Wirelss NIC.

First thing I did was uninstall the wireless network adapter from the device manager. I then uninstalled the belkin wireless utility from add/remove programs in the control panel. I then shut down the computer. Then i removed the Wireless NIC card and restarted the computer. After an uneventful boot, I loaded the latest driver executable from Belkin for my device p/n F5D7001. Installation went without a hitch. I then shut down computer and installed the wireless NIC. After boot, the new device wizard popped up as the user manual said it would, I followed the directions up to the point where it said find the appropriate drivers automatically, at which point a second window openened up with the asking which driver did I want to use. This is the only time during the installation i'm not sure of and deviated from what the manual said was going to happen. It listed 2 different files located in the C:\Windows\Inf folder. They were oem13.inf, bcmwl5.inf. After looking at each of the files properties, the bcmwl5 file had current date for creation so I chose it. Istallation finished without a problem and prompted for reboot of the computer when I was finished. I then rebooted.

After the machine rebooted, both the belkin wireless utility and the windows wireless network icon indicated a strong signal that was connected at 54Mbps. Alright!! I opened a browser and after the home page loaded (yahoo!), i refreshed it just to make sure of the connection. It works!! Or so I thought.

I then watched the connection speed by hovering my mouse pointer over the belkin wireless utility icon in the sys tray and noticed the connection was steadily dropping. 54...36...28...16...1 1Mbps!! What the? It stayed at 1Mbps for about 15-20 minutes and then the belkin wireless utility went red and a pop-up appeared that said network connection was lost.

This was the 3rd time i've done this procedure. The first time it worked momentarily before dropping off. The second time it worked for 2 weeks before dropping off yesterday. And this last time which it dropped off almost immediately. I'm exhausted....

I called tech support before doing the last re-install. Guess what they told me to do...exactly what I had done twice prior. And if I still had problems after that to call back. I was going to tell them that I had already done it twice, but was getting frustrated with the call due to a bad connection and a language barrier (philippines is my guess), so said ok and started again.

Here are system specs:
HP Pavillion a520n w/ XP Pro
Geforce FX 5500
Belkin Desktop Wireless G P/N F5D7001
Router is a D-Link DI-624
All drivers are up to date. Mobo Chipset, video, etc.
Also have the onboard ethernet connection disabled in the bios.

Are there perhaps some windows settings I am overlooking?

Is it possible to install the drivers for the Wireless NIC without the belkin wireless utility and use windows to setup and control the NIC?

Any help is greatly appreciated.
