I just got back from 10 days in Belize (Central America). I have to say that it is the coolest place to go to ever. There is so much to do there and everything is obscenely cheap. It's also a 1.5 hour flight from Miami.

Possible Activities:
Scuba - best in western hemisphere
Mayan Ruins
River Tubing through caves
Fishing
Drinking $1 beers

I'll have pictures on my website later in the week.

English is the national language and everyone learns it in school. Nevertheless, everyone speaks either creole or spanish on the street. The cool thing about the creole is that it is english based (same as Jamaica) so you can kind of understand it.

How is it for stability and safety for Americans, lots of danger these days of kidnap all over Latin America.

What would you say about the place as a honeymoon spot?

That's what I was wondering. Kidnapping US citizens is a valid concern (Proof Of Life) but probably employees of large US corporations are more at risk than JimBobJoeSmith who only has $1,000 in his checking account.

Belize is probably second only to Costa Rica in terms of Central American political stability and kidnapping is not really an issue. I felt VERY safe while I was there except maybe in the capital city. Everywhere else is fine.

As far as it being a poor country, that is definitely true. The people are poor, but they are not starving. The country only has a population of 250,000 so overcrowding is not a problem. Belizeans are VERY friendly and do not view Americans as sources of income as much as just people to talk to.

There are plenty of $10 a night hotel rooms.

LOL I only said that because this really did happen to a few Oregonians who worked for a helicopter manufacturer. I don't think it was Belize but it was some other country around there, they were eventually released after being held captive for a while and the companies who sent their employees shelled out some big bucks.

:D

I stayed at the Paradise Villas, but when I go back, I will probably stay here. It is really nice, it's accross the street from the airstrip, and it has its own dive operation.

Sounds like a great place and I'm way overdue for a vacation.

Do you need a passport there or is driver's license & birth certificate enough?

I heard the women outnumber the men there in a big way. Did you happen to hit the big "foam" parties that they have.

Belize = Party from what I hear. :)

EDIT - I am thinking of some place else...now what was it? Similar name near Spain..........?

Thump553 - You need a passport, but if you stay less than 30 days, you do not need a visa.

HansHurt - It is not Bangcock. You can have a great time and whoop it up, but the general mood of the place is pretty relaxed. As far as the women are concerned, many are of mayan descent. This makes them short and dumpy with pushed in faces :Q. The hottest girls are all tourists.
