My GTS 640 was hitting 91C load in games and artifacts were appearing in silent hunter & BF2.

My vendor is sending me an 512 GTS , he says despite less ram there's are slightly quicker and cooler?

Good deal for me ?

That's an awesome deal for you! The 512 is a WAY better card: Smaller process, less heat, and faster.

you got faster prev gen card; last gen cards (gtx260, hd4870) are still way faster than either one of them.

Not sure about way better but at least 10-15% gain that you should expect across the board based on my personal experiences.
The gtx260 is not that "way better" than any of those 8800s, also based on my recent personal experience, perhaps 10-15% better.
The term "way better" should mean at least > 30% of the performance IMO.
I did go from 8800gts(640) -> 8800gts (g92) -> gtx260 within 18 months period, but i think the 260 is going back due to a very poor o/c card and not gain by that much in most games (10-15%, max).

It's a huge gain. The 640 is junk compared to the 512 GTS, which is basically a 8800GTX.

Upgrades from RMA are always nice. I remember getting a 9800pro when my 9700pro's fan died and killed it.

I felt harsh emailing my vendor screenshots of my temps (91C and 72C), the red lines appearing a 3rd of the way down the screen.

But a nice gain has made me feel a tiny bit better :)

I am replacing my MB and ram soon, so this saves me upgrading my GPU :)

no it is not, they are way slower than last gen cards

it is like saying "your todays games are gonna play better if you have GF4Ti instead GF4MX"

First: The 8800GTS640 is still, even by todays standards, a fairly powerful card. Many of my friends have them and are still happily playing the latest games on them.

Second: The 8800GTS512 is definitely a faster GPU over the GTS640, and also has 128MB less GDDR3. Still faster however, but not as fast as an 8800GTX which still gave a 9800GTX a run for it's money in some titles.

To the OP, you should be pleased when you get your replacement card.

Almost perfecto, but the 8800GT is a scooch faster than the GTS640.

yeah, that is more realistic, you're gonna play games on same resolution and details for those two.

unarguably yes

not sure how this thread could have derailed as much as it has over minor details, it should have ended with the first reply...

You forgot to mention "draws less power." Basically, all-round win.

isnt the 8800 15 GTS the 9800 GT ?

No, the 8800 GT is the match to the 9800 GT. The 8800 GTS 512MB is a closer match to a 9800 GTX (just at lower clocks).

No duh! However, unlikely that any company will RMA up to that level. Well, one can always hope for the best...

98xx is a lateral move from 88xx...about equal across the board.

The 8800GTX/OC/Ultra still will beat the rest at large screen sizes.

The G92 GTS is worlds different than the previous gen.

8800 GTS original < 8800GT < 8800 GTS (G92).

Also the 4850 everyone raves about is not really a GTX killer. It's a great bang for buck though.

I choose a GTX over the 4850 and saved a whopping $15 after rebates would have been applied to the 4850.

The 512 also has a does a better job at playing high def video. About half the cpu utilization of the 640.
