Think of unemployment has a forced vacation.

My friend did and enjoyed his time before he found another job.

LOL - I try but when I get hungry.....I know I'm not vacationing. It would be great if I never got into my accident, but now I'm even thinking about applying at a gas station to make some cash. :(

This isn't a bad idea, because in an interview, when asked, "What have you been doing in your spare time?" you have a very good answer. Having a job lesser than that of which you're qualified will show that you are willing to work. Could be the deciding factor between you and "person X".

Also, "when I'm not pumping gas, I am hard at work trying to find my next job to further my professional career as a XXXXXXXX".

The PROS:
1) Shows you are not lazy in interviews. Willing to work.
2) You make money.
3) idle hands are the devils helper (you won't kill time by spennding money)

Actually, many places won't hire "overqualified" people, because they know that as soon as they have a better opportunity, they're gone..

Oh, whoops.. I completely misunderstood what you were saying.. Yeah, that's true.. Carry on. ;)

Online job boards are almost a total waste of time. Better than watching TV, but otherwise the least effective way of getting a job. Newspaper or contacts or trade shows or looking up companies wherever or temp agencies are all better.

Then of course, he got a job in ALABAMA. Sigh.

Hey, look on the bright side: All you can eat NASCAR, tractor pulls, backyard wrestling, trailer parks.. ;)

I am seriously considering getting a roommate, and taking a lower-paying job to ride out the slump. I figure at worst it could be another year or two before things start to pick up steam again.

I can't believe that people don't like being unemployed. I think they just don't like being without money.

Ive had great success with job boards. 50% of my interviews have been due to job boards. my interview breakdown following college last december and after just recently being laid off has been:

bayareahelpwanted: 1
monster: 2
careerbuilder: 1
career fairs: 1
emailing companies website directly: 1
via a headhunter: 2

and two out of three jobs ive had have been via job boards (bayareahelpwanted and careerbuilder). double check your cover letter/resume and make sure to apply to jobs that you qualify for

You guys and gals that are out of work or a college student haveing a problem with eating here is some advice.
Everyday look at the Obits in your local paper. There is almost always a dinner after the funeral, go eat! No one knows who you are and if asked just say I was a friend. Plenty of good food for free.

Can you guys tell me how you look or looked for a job?
3 words: Network, network, network. Only 15% of the jobs/positions are gained by looking through the newspaper and applying for posted positions. While nearly 85% of the positions are found by networking and finding "in-roads" into the company - go through someone to get to the hiring manager. In a lot of situations, they may not have the "exact" position for you, but they may develop a "hybrid" position within their company for you. Where did I get all of this knowledge, you ask? Last week, I took a 2-day intensive course with a leading placement agency. The information I learned was pretty good.

Additionally, I'm a veteran. Do you know what this means? Well, let me tell you. The other day, I stopped by the unemployment office to find out a little bit of information. I was told to have a seat for a few minutes. There were about 20 people waiting to talk to one of the counselors. After waiting about 2 minutes, I was called and escorted back to see one of their Veteran's counselors - yes, I by-passed the typical wait that would have been behind those 20 others. I was glad to see that my earlier military experience had some benefit. Oh, I also get exclusive use of the 2 benefits counselors for postions that are posted / going to be posted. Yeah, baby! :)
Unless you are in a Union that squibbles over "lost" new jobs because of technology (oh, brother) and could care less about the $2 billion daily impact to the American economy.
Actually, I was glad to see that President Bush stepped in and now a judge has ordered the dock-workers back to work. However, on that same note, they said it could take 2 months to unload all of the backed-up freight that was sitting on the ships within the harbours. Personally, I'm anti-union. Unions are only good if you're not an aggressive individual. However, if you can speak up for yourself, push yourself to continously achieve more education throughout your lifetime, then there's no need to belong to a union. You'll do much better and be more successful without the baggage of a union.
