"I don't know anything about PCs or computers" normally works pretty well. If it doesn't sink in just keep repeating it over and over and over. Repetition really drives it home.

Fortunately, most of my relatives don't have computers.

I did however fix my sister's friend's laptop. Hard drive was accumulating bad sectors, and the heatsink was clogged with 4 years-worth of dust.
No, I do not have pics. Just......just envision someone hot and fap away. Sheesh.

Though there are my parents' computers. My mom's computer problem was due to me reformatting her system and forgetting to reinstall various things, including InCD for her to do weekly/monthly backups to DVD+RW discs. My dad, well, he's great with Excel. That's really about it.

And at college, it's actually a bit easier. My roommates are good with computers, and they know the limitless joy of having to fix other people's computers. So they also know that the key is to not let anyone know about this, with the exception that access to these skills is not free.

not reading the thread but....get used to it and dont you think everyone here has to deal with that lol.

My mom called me today and yesterday from work to fix her stuff(she has her own business)

1. Couldnt play her DVD....she only had a cd player
2. Her computer was "slow"
3. One program icon was not working corrected and then she started freaking out when she accidently copied her desktop icons like three times over.

anmd then her co worked comes over and is like...my son just bought this AWSOME compaq from Circuit city for 500 dollors. Isnt that great!

I pity the fool who gets stuck fixing computers for free!

Lucky for me, my relatives have extremely low standards and would prefer to have the "comfort" of a Dell or HP rather than one of my "frankenstein machines", what with their superior quality hardware, lower overall costs, manufacturer warranties, and whatnot.

My folks have some very strange beliefs about computers, actually, and I'm not quite sure whether they evolved from general ignorance or from watching too many so-called "experts" on various TV shows. For example, my mom believes that me replacing the LOUD intake fan on her HP tower will erase the hard drive and my sister insists that me installing a basic sound card in her dinosaur of a Micron would make its programs all stop functioning (?).

Agreed - I usually throw something out, maybe "I'm not really sure what the problem is, that sounds pretty strange, I'd take it to _____________ or call up whoever you bought it from"

You shouldn't ever question them, just agree and move on, it's not worth the time or effort.

Do who I do. Just tell them you work with software only and know nothing about computer hardwares or Windows.

Anyway, I just feel like whining a little bit. Sorry for this bit of thread pollution.

Oh HELL YEA preach on brother. I get this too. My freakn brothers wife. She thinks im dell tech support. She calls me at my job (can you believe it). To tell me she is having computer problems. My color is not right. Oh i think everything is running slow. Can you look at this can you look at that. I have even been rude to her before. WHat does she do. She gets pissed at first and then she cools down later and decides to START AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can tell everyone. Tell your family you don't know s$it about computers. It will save you a lot of headaches in the future.

I fix computers for all family members and friends for free...I only do it when asked to.
If I see a computer with AIDS(viruses, spyware, 10 seconds response time to load an app like IE) regardless of who owns it, I don't touch and attempt to fix personally unless I'm asked to.
I should by right charge some of my classmates, but we've become so attached like a family now. Knowing the SAME exact people in your SAME exact classes for 4 years straight doesn't help.

There's no way I can hide it. People come to your room, see your case and say "wow."(and no, I don't use neon lights). You tell *few* friends, and by then everyone who knows you knows. It doesn't help when I get visitors come unexpectedly knocking on the door while I'm in the middle of opening my case checking RAM, Mobo, and cleaning dust etc...

I also work in the computer lab in my dormitory in which I'm supposed to "supervise and assist". I do neither.
I just come there, open the door, punch in, and either read there or use my laptop or remote desktop.
Anyone who comes here and asks me "do you work here?" I tell them "No."

Someone: "Excuse me, Printer 1 isn't working..."
Me: "I dont work here" while thinking in my mind try Printer 2 you idiot.

Fix a computer for your best friend, and you'll have to fix for his girlfriend, and his girlfriends friends.

"Computers? What? Oh, something inside the box is wrong? Well, I don't know anything about the box except the power button.." "Spyware? You tried to play James Bond or something..?"

Act like an idiot and people will leave you alone. :p
