Being thanked for paying my bill

It seems like there is a new trend of thanking us for paying our bills. I called sprint last week and one of the first things they did was pull up our account to see if everything was up to date and they said 'I see your account is up to date so I want to thank you for paying your bill on time'

Well today I called Barclays and when they looked at my history with them they said 'You have an excellent payment history so we want to thank you for always making your payments on time and being a great customer.'

My wife recently got the same thing from Chase.

Is it really such an odd thing to pay your obligations on time that companies are now thanking you for it?

It's supposed to give you a warm fuzzy feeling so you say "yes" when they try to sell you something.

Internet went down the other day. Called up Cox.

"Thank you for being a customer for - wow, 15 years!"

"Can you send out a tech out today to fix?"

"No."

:p

It's code for: Please relax a little... don't worry so much about your bills.... So you can miss it by a couple days and owe us a $45 late fee, an interest payment, and some other fee for a total of $75 for simply forgetting to pay on-time once. Oh yeah, and a credit ding too.

They don't make money off you (or me). I pay my bill every month, they haven't made a single cent of interest off me outside of their vendor charges (~1%)

Cox High Speed Internet will soon have 1 Gbps download and 1 Gbps upload by the end of 2016 in most places it is offered.

Neither Barclays nor Citi tried to sell us something. Maybe I'll nicely ask the next time someone says that

I haven't thanked you yet. Not that you owe me but you could let me hold a dollar. Then I'd thank you.

You'd be surprised how many people don't pay bills on-time and for those companies, it's a major hassle (and probably adds to cost) to claim the money.

I thank people for not running me over at crosswalks even when I have the right of way...
