It's a way of marking what you think is the answer to your query. It's to let others know that you were satisfied that the response (which you marked as the answer) answered your original post.

In this thread, you could've marked oldsmoboat's reply as the answer. If no reply is good enough, you shouldn't mark any as the answer so that people will try to help.
