Being on a "money saving" spree is a PITA

Found a great deal on a 19" Acer LCD screen at the bloated billfold but $150 is a $150. We're trying to get our debts paid down and money saved up to send our kids to a good private school so all "unnecessary" spending is now dead to me. But I would sooo love to replace my 19" Viewsonic fat butt CRT with a skinny LCD. <sigh> I've already given up my season tickets to Alabama football.

My kids are soooo going to owe me!! LOL

The one we want to send our kids to rocks. Fantastic academics and athletics programs. I've looked at their curriculum and wish I was half as challenged when I went to public school.

Public school's are just chancy. Some good some bad, some good teachers some terrible. Quintessentially mediocre (though one can get a GREAT education from them, if parents are involved, etc.)
I choose private school. My sister and other's I've encountered, have a lot of anxiety and resentment about their schools, I have none of that. It's worth the price just to send them somewhere I really feel comfortable with, and there's also a great sense of ownership.

We're looking at ~$10k per year per kid.

Are the public schools bad around there? They're pretty good up here so I haven't worried to much about that. We pay plenty of taxes for them though so I hope they're decent around here.

They're alright. The Gwinnett County public schools are some of the best in the state of Georgia but then again...it is Georgia which ranks near the bottom nationally.

The school area we are in now is pretty good because it is in an area where lots of well-to-do people live. But it is also in an area where there is a fast growing illegal immigrant population. Plus, Gwinnett has already gotten in trouble for under-reporting crimes and violent incidents inside schools.

It really is a mixed bag.

Really? I had classmates making drug paraphenallia in my science class in gov't high school. Plus a good portion of the female population pregnant and at least one fight per week in the halls (the three way girl fight was pretty awesome though).

Meanwhile, the private school that we'd like to send our kids too has a long list of kids that went on to successful college careers and a low incident rate of crime, pregnancies, and more.

It is about choice.

I went to public schools and am now attending a private university. I definitely must say that private school wins in every category... hands down. My public highschool was a horrible waste of time.

I think that if I have kids, they will go to private schools as well. The only problem I have with most private schools is that they are usually "religiously affiliated". I want my kids to get a good education but I don't want them subjected to Christianity's brain-washing.

Honestly it just sounds like you went to a ghetto school. I didn't goto the best public school but there weren't many fights and such.

And yes, you're right, it is about choice. I chose public because I'm satisfied with it. Besides, here in LA you can always bus your kid to another school with the programs they're interested in (arts, language, medicine, etc.)

Yeah I went from an academically tough lily white school in Michigan to a high school in S. Texas where being white was a minority and I was able to sleep through most of my AP Honors classes and get an A.

Actually I didn't work too hard in my AP classes either but got good grades and did well on the AP tests. But I digress...really fvcked me up for college since I had no idea how to study.

We're looking at ~$10k per year per kid.

It's a Waldorf school, about $8000 a year.
If you want a 'traditionally' academically challenging environment Waldorf may not be for you. I often call it a Hippie school, and many people dislike that aspect of it. But we love it, and we love the community. We could send our kids to public schools which are in the top 50 for our state, but we chose this school because it resonated deeply and personally with us.
