Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

Gay actress makes a comment that her being gay is a choice. Before she was in a relationship with a woman, she was married to a man and had 2 children.

Among the activists most horrified by Nixon's comments was Truth Wins Out founder Wayne Besen, whose organization monitors and tries to debunk programs that claim to cure people of same-sex attractions with therapy. Besen said he found the actress' analysis irresponsible and flippant, despite her ample caveats.

A group that prides itself on teaching tolerance, shows little tolerance for everyone else.

Gay rights group - Respect my opinion, or else.

Gay lady - being gay is a choice, at least to me.

Gay rights group - I do respect your opinion.

Man on man, that is laughable.

What's your point?

She may have been married to a man and had 2 children, but I know many lesbians and gay men who came from heterosexual relationships. The attraction toward the same gender was always there, just suppressed to fulfill some other temporary desire/need.

The "I was born this way" argument is the result of dealing with homophobic bigots. If homosexuality is not evil and must be punished why would it matter if it is a matter of choice or not.

It was a choice for her...her opinion...her life...but don't use her words to paint a picture with broad strokes.

Typically it's the religious angle - if they were born that way, that means that <deity> created them that way. But then that deity would not longer really be benevolent or loving if he created something that was inherently evil or bad. It's what often happens when logic is applied to religion: You need to twist the hell out of your brain to be able to reconcile completely contradictory ideas.

Or some people just have some irrational fear of homosexuality that just shows up out of nowhere, independent of religion.

Freudian slip?

And Cynthia Nixon is right. It is a choice for her because she is bisexual. imo, nearly all of us are bisexual to a greater or lesser degree. It's just that the vast majority strongly have a preference one way or the other. Viewing sexual preference as a binary thing seems kind of ridiculous.

Human sexuality is a complex thing.

It's a well-documented, widespread phenomena that gay men because of social pressure don't want to think they're gay, and have married and tried to live straight.

The general result is that they have a hard time always fighting their feelings.

But in addition so 'straight' and 'gay' are people like bi-sexuals who do have more of a 'choice'.

I've known straight men and women who are repulsed at the idea of a same-sex encounter; they don't 'choose' to be repulsed; while bi-sexuals can choose.

This sounds like a right-wing agenda propaganda bit misrepresenitng facts to tell a lie of what people on the right want to hear, that it's a 'choice', to legitimize bigotry.

All this in an effort to pander to the bigots for their votes, to serve an agenda for the very wealthy.

Who cares how people are hurt by this, if it helps get the votes?

Yes it is. Very. Almost nothing about life in general and human biology/physiology/psychology in particular is binary. Sexuality being binary would be a statistical outlier, at best.

Babies are not born with sexual awareness or identities. That is learned behavior. It does not really appear till puberty. However, people in general tend to have tendencies for different traits. I know from experienc and being exposed to various people that some people are very prone to become alcoholics, from their first drink. However, people can choose not to drink. It is quite possible from a psychological point of view that most people have both straight and gay tendencies. I consider that how people are brought up and whether they are taught what is sexually acceptable (or not taught) tends to teach the individual person what is acceptable. Then they act or act out in rebellion based on what they are taught.

Did someone teach you to get a boner when you see an attractive naked woman?

If that were true, there would be very few homosexuals in areas where it's generally taught that homosexuality is not acceptable. But no.. homosexuals are found all over the place.

Being attracted to someone is not a choice. Acting on that attraction is a choice. The difference is profound.

Why can't it be multiple paths? Why can't some people be born gay, some people through life experiences be made gay, and some people just chose to be gay?

Doesn't really matter what path they took to get there, whenever they confirm it, at minimum, that's the point they're gay. Who F'ing cares...
