I'm sitting here in the control room for our local Country music station, being the "producer" for a Junior hockey game. boring.......

anyway, does anyone else work in the radio biz? i'm the evening guy here at "Country 1570 CKMW" Does this job ever get exciting, besides knowing that hundreds of ppl who you don't know know you?

I DJ'd for a few years while in college. It was very boring. Basically following the PD's play list and taking phone calls. I can see why so many DJ's come up with stupid contests, jokes and other fill to make it more interesting. The worst was when I filled in at a talk station. All programming came in via satellite. I just sat there and once an hour gave the call sign and played a news cart.

What no radio groupies? Thought you guys spent all your free time on the phone lining up dates?

if i played any songs in the middle of a live hockey game, the lines would glow. my producer would be canning my hide.

I loved DJing at my college station. I got to hear all kinds of new music, meet lots of people in the local music scene, and of course the people who phoned in were always fun. I guess commercial radio would suck, though.

Try DJing at a POPULAR radio station. :p

I used to be the "Jacked-Up" Morning Show producer and had my own Saturday night radio show at Radio Free Hawaii (1995-1997). The phones NEVER (well almost never) stopped ringing.

I also used to prefer to work without an "intern" on my own show so I did a lot more work. We were an independant radio station with about a 5,000 CD library and probably the most popular "alternative" radio station in Honolulu (we were so "successful" we got "bought-out" by the competition).

It was the most FUN "job" I ever had. Some day I may return to radio as a DJ.

The Dj rarely picks what he plays. It's all produced days a head of time. can throw in requests, but if I'd rewrite the whole playlist, that would be... frowned upon.

Actually. Radio Free Hawaii was "listener-driven". They set up BALLOT Boxes all over the Island and listeners VOTED for what they wanted played.

And there were endless hours of LISTENER REQUESTS (called "Monkey Train") where the "rotation" was THROWN-OUT (one I remember lasted for THREE days). And we DID get to MIX-BEATS (depending on what we were playing).

I MEAN it when I said it was FUN. :D

EDIT: I bet some of the AT Forum members from Hawaii remember 102.7FM as the most "unique" radio station - EVAR.

I'm jealous, If i was on that kind of station I'm sure I would like it. This station has a few strikes against it:

1. small town
2. country
3. am
4. i'm the evening guy.
5. if i wasn't running a hockey game.

I used to be really interested, but several people in the industry warned me the pay for the most part is ridiculous.

I would still be interested if I could find a cool metal station to work at, and could pick my own playlists and pretty much do my own thing on-air. Chances of that happening though are virtually nil.

Just keep your "demo" tapes in good order. 1-5 can change rather easily if you like radio AND:

1. Move
2. Pick a station with a format you like better
3. move to FM
4. A "reliable" evening guy has opportunities to move to daytime (but I had the MOST fun at night)
5. . . . (etc.)

EDIT:Aceshigh, Simply start your OWN radio station.

I went out with one once or twice. I went down to the station when he was working and relieved his boredom though.;):Q

Really, how?

:D

I used to like when I could pick any Janes' Addiction song . . . those 15 minute long songs were awesome for . . . uh . . . "breaks".

Actually, I almost forgot - the most interesting thing on the Morning Show were the guests . . . Tommy Chong (guess what he brought?)
. . . the perks (free concerts - imagine what good "alternative" shows pass thru Honolulu) . . . etc.
