Being a computer guy, people routinely ask me about starting their own website. The thing is, I haven't been interested in that since I was writing HTML in Notepad and hosting it on my own home computer and Geocities was around for everyone else. The people that ask me these kinds of things usually aren't looking for anything more than an online flyer with contact info, pictures, etc. Basically, something that isn't worth paying a professional and monthly hosting expenses.

I often suggest just skipping a web site and using facebook or something, but that isn't enough for many people. They still badger me for answers even though I'm not interested enough to know myself and doing their research for them annoys me. Before I tell these people (usually coworkers trying to set up a side business) to eff-off, I should at least ask: Where would you guys send them?

If its obvious they won't even be able to set up a hosting account and use a template then I'd say something like Blogger or maybe wordpress.com. I don't really know of any services for just contact info and pictures, you said that Facebook doesn't cut it for most people, but can't you make your contact information view-able on Facebook and store an unlimited number of pictures? Do they need to do anything else? Or do they want the stuff accessible to everyone, not limiting themselves to Facebook?

doing their research for them annoys me.

I hear you, what really annoys me is people who instead of taking 20 seconds to Google something, waste my time having me explain it.
