Behavioural Interview

Hi all

I have an interview this afternoon at 2:30. It's the behavioural type and is geared to stimulate responses based on work experience. I've reviewed the core competencies of the job and typed out examples of each in respect to my work experience. There is a panel of three people interviewing me. Someone told me that the first thing they do is try to get you to relax, which I'm hoping is true because I'm nervous already.

This is for an internal position in another department but two of the three panel members are managers from other offices so I don't know them.

Basically I'm going to walk in, shake hands with a nice firm handshake but not too firm, and hope for the best.

I feel prepared but I just wanted to probe ATOT for any last-minute tips. I'm thinking of bringing in a sheet with my stories on it for reference - do you think this is ok?

Is there a maximum level of preparedness for this type of interview? ie. Should I not really worry about it because they are going to open me up like a book no matter what I have in mind? Thanks and wish me luck!

Wear a pink tie. That will intimidate them, and then if they start to give you guff, idly fiddle with it and mention that you've no problem jerseying a punk who doesn't know his place.
Good luck! 🙂

Make sure you stand up, scream loudly, and fling poo at least once during the course of the interview.

SLAMMIN 🙂

JAMMIN?

Outside of that, bring your kneepads and a bib, might help!

now don't start that again!

OP: you sound like you have it handled as long as you don't get too nervous. Relax!

You need to put yourself at ease and show them that you have a genuine personality. I recommend going in wearing an 8-bit necktie. They'll probably get a laugh out of it. 🙂

OMG! Where do I buy that? My geek metter just detected something.

n/m...found it on thinkgeek🙂

Put a towel in your pocket to wipe off your hands if they get sweaty.

Oh, and don't bad mouth your former employer, even if they try to bait you into it with some leading questions.

Definitely use a cheat-sheet ... if an employer has a problem with you using that as reference, then I'd have an issue. It shows you prepared, and you know what, even if you have it, you'll probably feel comfortable enough you won't use it.

To segue into asking if it is OK, just ask if you can take notes, and have everything already down on the paper 🙂

Good luck!

it's ok to bring it in, plus one of the other applicants just gave me a brief lowdown of what her interview was like. preparedness +1!

i'm nervous but i can do it. thanks guys

i'm goin in

To the OP, one thing that I've found that really helps is that at the end of answering a question, say something like "Is this the answer you were looking for?" or "Is that clear enough?" ...something to that effect rather than just finishing your answer, suddenly becoming very quiet and staring at them. If they are unsatisfied with your answer, as soon as you say that, their facial expression or body language will tell you that they want you to clarify a little bit more or if you gave them the very answer they were hoping for.

It went so good, that I feel that if someone tops it, they deserve the job hands down!

w00t 🙂

I walked in, there was a peice of paper taped to the boardroom table with 4 questions on it. This isn't verbatim but maybe it can help someone in the future:

- When did you go above what was required to provide an exceptional level of customer service to a client or stakeholder? What did you do to provide it?

- Think about a contentious issue you encountered while dealing with a client and describe how you went about handling it.

- Discuss a project that you worked on which involved using technical skills applicable to the job. Describe in detail from beginning to end your involvement and contribution to the project.

- Think about a situation involving teamwork and describe how you contributed to the team.

They gave me a moment to read the questions and also gave me a bottle of water. Then I said, "Ok I'm ready" and one of the panel members read the first question.

During my responses, they were all writing frantically. I think it's good that they were writing a lot. After my responses, they would ask more about the response and try to get me to expand or elaborate on other aspects of the answer.

That's about it... I think it went great.

Excellent ... Here's to getting a new position and more $$$ (well, hopefully anyway).
