beginner's golf club set for $120

there are coupons around to take $30 off over $120 purchase, which makes it $120 for the whole set, I think it is a pretty good deal if you are a beginner.

any comments?

If you're looking for comments I'll give you one. These clubs are pure junk!. Usually, better sets have cast stainless iron heads and the cheap junk stuff is cast zinc. The description states the irons are aluminum but then down at the bottom of the page it states, zinc. Either way, they are to be avoided.

A begineer is much better off starting with some component clubs or buying used.

These clubs are not a hot deal. They are bad clubs at an appropriate price.

Would you buy a $50 guitar if you were starting lessons? Would you buy a Intel 486 PC if you were "learning" or using computers for the first time? I wouldn't.

You certainly don't need a set of Taylor Made irons to start swinging clubs, but bad clubs to reinforce bad golf habits (that are developed to compensate for poor clubs). Plus, zinc is brittle and these clubs can actually break.

A decent deal is the set of Jack Nicklaus Golden Bear clubs at Costco (B&M) for $199 after $50 instant rebate. It includes a full set of woods and irons and a pretty nice bag. Shafts are graphite but with a lot of flex; clubs are a bit top heavy. Still, clubs are high grade still; titanium face driver and for $200, it's a decent buy. Furthermore, with Costco's generous return policy, you can pretty much return it at any time.

Titleist 990 3-pw steel RH regular flex for 399 at golfbargains.com
and the Taylor Made 300 series wood also on sale for less than 200 bucks,
there should be no tax and shipping, very good irons, normally selling for 699 else where.

Give the guy a break for posting a decent deal!

I'm just getting into golf myself and considered going the store-brand/clones route, which many do quite successfully. I decided that I'd rather shop around for a good set of 1-2 year old clubs that I won't outgrow for many seasons. I found a brand-new set of previous-year stock Orlimar TriMetal irons (3-PW) from a pro shop on eBay for $204 shipped. I consider it a great deal, but even the Knights this guy spoke of will do a beginner just fine. If he plays twice and puts them down, he can probably get most of his money back by eBaying them. If he gets good and falls in love with the game (as many of us do), then he can look at a better set of clubs.

Good deal...for the right person. Thanks.

the 990's are not "normally selling for 699" anywhere. they are discontinued. and a beginner should stay the hell away from them. and the TM 300 driver is also discontinued. i never get more smiles than when people who never recommend obsolete computers or parts are the first to recommend obsolete golf clubs.

Get some custom made knock-offs at any local place for that price. I have Ping Eye 3 clones... interesting enough my mom's b/f has the real Ping Eye 3's and I hit them the same. Mine only cost $150 custom sized.

My very first set of clubs I bought 10 years ago were cheap-o Dunlops from Walmart. 6 monhts after owning them I realized that the 9 iron was the same length as a the 6 iron... talk about a learning curve. 🙂

BTW what the hell does "obsolete golf clubs" mean? Unlike computer parts, Golf clubs still work with all the latest balls, courses, tees, etc. Some of my best clubs are the one's I've had for 10 years.

Well, as they say, ignorance is bliss...so smile away. You're comparing apples and orangutans, my friend.

But thanks, now I'm smiling too.
