Beginner overclocker with Asus P4G8X, 2.4ghz-B cpu. What's the best heatsink?

Hello, I have been building computers for almost 6 years now, but I am completely new to overclocking. I am going to purchase the Asus P4G8X-Deluxe motherboard when it comes out in a few weeks and use a 2.4ghz pentium 4 cpu (533 version) I have already. Also, I also have two sticks of 256mb Kingston DDR2100 memory.

I have no idea what to do first, but I figure I should start with a good cooling system as I know that is an important part of successful overclocking. The p4 2.4ghz cpu I have is retail, coming with the standard intel heatsink and fan. What should I replace these with? What is an econical, effective (and hopefully quiet) cpu cooling solution?

I'm scared I will burn out my brand new cpu/motherboard by doing something stupid with settings, so any advice or suggestions are appreciated. I'd like some ideas of heatsinks/fans so I can get them for Christmas. Thanks

Start with the stock hsf, it's actually a good unit. The best P4 heatsinks are the Alpha PAL and the Swiftech MCX4000...hth 🙂

Hey Flakk, you may not be able to do very much OC'ing with your Kingston PC2100 sticks. Your 2.4 should be able to hit very near 3GHz or better, but the Kingston may not be able to take the higher speed. Good luck, though!

Doobie: How come? I thought Kingston was a good brand when I was buyin it. Is it just because it's 2100 and not 2700? or is kingston not good for overclocking? :disgust:

Lou: Thanks, thats good to know. Always nice when you dont have to go and buy extra stuff.

Yeah, I was referring to the fact that it's PC2100 and you may not be able to reach PC2700+ speeds. It really depends on the type of chips. Hopefully you'll be able to get it, and the cpu, to run in the 160FSB range. 🙂 The Intel HSF is a good one, but I was running a little hotter than I wanted at 160FSB so I moved to the Alpha PAL8942T and slapped a quiet 32CFM fan on it. It's working out pretty well - my temps hit the low 50's under load and that's fine by me. Let us know how your OC turns out, and good luck!

oh darn.. i didnt know that i had to increase the memory speed as well as cpu... i would have bought faster ram. ah well, thats good to know, so i know why my system may be unstable if i try to overclock. I'll let u know how it goes when i attempt it. thanks for the help
