Beginner looking for a Bass guitar

I'm not really sure what to look for since it will be my first bass. The only place around here is Guitar Center or I could check Craigslist if necessary.

Would like to spend less than $450 for guitar and amp

Any help?

Musician's Friend bass/amp combo packs

Take a look at the Epiphone and Ibanez combos. The amps will be pretty much junk, but will give you something to practice with, and you will get a decent bass. Or you can go to Guitar Center and pick out a $200 bass and a $200 Peavey amp. Just remember, you won't get anything but a practice bass amp for less than about $600.

i would buy used off craigslist if possible. go for a squier (made by fender) jazz bass and a small brand name amp. this will suit you until you've decided whether you want to stick with it. You can then pawn these off at the same price you bought them and buy real gear.

Another vote for Ibanez. They make a good bass for little money. I find Fender and Squire basses a little odd to play.

Craigslist barely has anything here in Baton Rouge. This is the best I could find. Is it decent?

Not for that price. I'd suggest getting a pack. I've been playing for a little over ten years now, and I started out on a Squire P-Bass pack. Dean also makes great basses, so I'd recommend going to your local Guitar Center and playing around with the different bass packs they have. Find one that feels right - don't listen too much to the crap they spew (the people at GC work for commission) and go with one that you like.

Made in Mexico Fender P-Bass is a nice instrument to start out on.

Amp wise your best bet is to go used (used on the guitar would be fine too), not really too knowledgeable about bass amps.

I would stay clear of any packaged instruments. Quality is usually shotty, and they're gear you WILL be replacing within a year if you stick to playing. Yes they are cheaper than getting a nicer instrument, but have almost no real resale value.
