Hey all.

I would like to build a website on which my wife can advertise and sell her handmade jewelry and, seeing as I'm pretty much a newb. in this area, I have a few questions:

1. Is it possible to do this through ISP hosted webspace (ie my ISP is Charter Communications: www.charter.net/service/faqs/webspace_charternet.asp)?

2. If not, is building a system specifically designed to host a server and buying my own domain name really feasible for a small business like this?

3. Once the site is up, how exactly do I have it added to search engines? Just add meta tags, actually pay a fee, both, neither?

I really appreciate any and all advice/help/pointers any of you are willing to give me on this :)

Not really you will want more options that it will give you.

You can get webhosting for pretty cheap. If you just need a little space to use and learn with PM me and will give you 200MB with PHP and MY SQl and stuff for free.

3. Once the site is up, how exactly do I have it added to search engines? Just add meta tags, actually pay a fee, both, neither?

All search engins have a submit a site link, you just do that and wait. Plus try to get sites to link to you that really helps.

Also check you TOS. Many ISP's do not allow businesses to be hosted from the free webspace you receive. It may be possible but www.charter.net/username/wifesjewelery.html is not as professional as www.yourdomain.com.

Too expensive. $2-$3000 for a decent server, plus $$$$$$$$ monthly costs for bandwidth. You may have cable now, but I doubt they will let you host a business website for the same rate you are paying for personal access. You can get hosted webspace with your own domain from $10 - $150 month depending on what services you need.

3. Once the site is up, how exactly do I have it added to search engines? Just add meta tags, actually pay a fee, both, neither?

You can add them yourself. I know with some searchengines if you pay a fee your site gets listed higher. But I have never used that service.

Thanks to all three of you, plenty to think about there.

I'll no doubt have some more questions when I get closer to setting this up!

if you're serious about deceloping websites (and not just webpages) look into php and mysql

Not trying to bash your post, but please read up on some good companies on WebHostingTalk before buying. I switched from PHPWebHosting to AddAction and it's been a blessing :)

But yes, you do want PHP and mySQL so you don't limit yourself in the long run. You will find HTML easy as cake and will be ready to do some dynamic stuff fairly quickly :)

Edit: Seems this new upgraded forum does not do as well with links in quotes :)
