Recently Ted Cruz said that he's never seen a Hispanic beggar:

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/ted-cruz-dont-think-ive-202843704.html

Presidential candidate and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said on Wednesday that he has never seen a Hispanic person begging for money on the street.

"I don't think I've ever seen an Hispanic panhandler. And the reason is: In our community it would be shameful to be begging on the street," Cruz said, recalling a conversation he once had with a Latino businessman on the topic.

Even though I lived in high-Hispanic populations in Southern California, I've only ever seen three Hispanic beggars (two of them in the past year). I THINK I've seen one Asian beggar. 99% of the time, it's a white/black beggar that I see. I always figured there is some subtle racism involved in the sense that Hispanics and Asians are expected to work, that people would not give them much/any handouts, etc.

Have you seen many Hispanic or even Asian beggars?

Nope. I don't think I've seen other than black/white. Some of that might be demographics, and remember, many Latinos have questionable residency status. Begging on the street makes you an obvious target for deportation.

Try a border town in Texas? I am not saying I know, but maybe those places would be more prone to it.

That said, I live in a major Texas city, and the only "panhandling" I see out of mexicans are sitting outside of a Lowe's/Home Depot looking to work. I hear they do REALLY SHITTY work, but nevertheless, it's work. So if you need basic labor for a small price, by all means.

edit: BUT... if you haven't seen a hispanic beggar I will trump you.... When was the last time you saw an ASIAN beggar? :D My answer would truly be never.

Most panhandlers here are drug addicts or mentally ill. You also get the occasional grifter who's only pretending to be poor. Most of them are white, with a few black guys thrown in for good measure.

I've seen plenty of Hispanic beggars, just not in the US or Canada.

Being from a large metropolitan area in Texas, I've seen plenty of Hispanic beggars. One even tried the "money for tacos and burritos" spiel on me.

I live in Dallas and don't recall seeing a Hispanic or Asian panhandler. I don't see too may honestly, but the large majority I've noticed are white.

It seems that Hispanics and Asians that immigrate here expect to work and are willing to take labor or perceived less fulfilling jobs. They are more often grateful for the work they have no matter how "low" or little pay. Growing up in America we are less inclined to want to take that work. Besides that we have put a negative stigma on doing that work. My .02 anyways.

there's an Asian beggar in downtown Houston. Been one for as long as I've worked downtown, which is about 15 years. Other than that, they're all whites or blacks.

Odd... I've never seen an Asian one when walking around downtown. All I see are black people for the most part as far as downtown. Hands down the dirtiest place in the city.

At least panhandlers usually just sit at intersections with a sign. When I'm downtown you have to walk next to them, smell them, and often times respond. Don't try to hand them some leftover fruit from your lunch either, they will outright refuse it.

I tried ignoring them, and often they go into some kind of tantrum fury and start yelling and I fear they are going to run up and bite me or something.

Ted Cruz has never gone to the "street" he always is driven around in limousines and private planes. He is not connected in any way shape or form with the planet earth or reality.

There are no hispanic beggars in his bubble. That is likely a true statement.

fwiw this reminded me of a stop during a family road trip in El Paso. The homeless were all quite tanned, but get closer and nearly all of them had blue eyes. I've lived my whole life in the southwest, and while I'm a bit further from the border now, I'd say whites easily predominate. As mentioned, mental illness is a big factor. When the looney bins were opened by Reagan in the 80s, you have to consider that there were less Hispanics proportionally in America at that time, and therefore a higher percentage of those dumped on the streets are likely to be white.

I lived in 75% Latino (mostly Mexican) Salinas, California for seven years. City has about 155,000 people. Yes, I've seen Latino/Hispanic beggars and street people.
