BEFSR41 v3.0 slows to a crawl

I have a Linksys BEFSR41 router from Linksys with 2 PC's connected to it. I also have a 30Mb/s cable Internet connection (Optimum Online). Every few hours though my connection will slow down to about 1.5 Mbps. To fix this I usually unplug the power from the router and plug it back in. This works 95% of the time.

Is there something wrong with my router or could it be that something is set wrong. I'm really a noob when it comes to networking. I know how to access my router from a web browser and how to forward ports but thats about it.

Any help would be appreciated.

I've had problems with all sorts of routers that when one of the PCs on the router is using bittorrent or anything else of that sort, or it has been hacked/rooted and has too many connections, the router will not even work. It's almost like a DDOS attack.

Are you sure one of the PCs connected isn't trying to connect to a lot of different things at once? you can usually find out by going into command prompt and typing in netstat /n If it displays a ton of connections there that may be the problem.

It does list alot of connections but most say established and all are from the router pc ip that i'm using. Some say "SYN_SENT", "TIME_WAIT", "CLOSE_WAIT" , and "FIN_WAIT".

Ok.. well let's start out with this then. Have you done a hard reset on the router by holding in the small reset button on the router? This will reset all the networking information within the router, so you may need to set that all up again. Most likely since it's a BEFSR41, it will do it itself if you are on a regular cable modem service.

I don't think that router is powerful enough for too much traffic. Maybe basic web browsing and e-mail. I had a pair and neither could handle the traffic I put through them. They'd either need to be power cycled or they'd reset on their own at random times. I got a D-Link DGL-4300 that's much more powerful of a router and I have never had any problems like that again. BEFSR41 = junk.

I have an older v1 BEFSR41 that can handle 15Mbps of bittorrent downstream and upstream (yay for working for an ISP part time), but newer revisions seem to be pretty crappy. I would also recommend seeking a newer router perhaps.

I never had any problems with my BEFSR41, I had problems with my WRT54G and my newer netgear (unsure of the model) but those are just wireless lag problems. I never experienced the wireless lag when I first purchased and used the WRT54G though.. Strange. Overall I HATE routers and their crippling power.. DMZ for the win.

So, I think I'm just going to get a new router. I've tried a hard reset many times and the same thing occurs.
I'm going to get a wireless.
Nboy22 would you recommend the WRT54G?

I have a befsr41 and stopped using it because it couldn't handle fast connections or ones with lots of connections.
The router would just hang and stop responding.

There are lots of better routers out there.

I don't know if I would actually recommend that router to anyone. It worked really well for me for the first bit (probably about a year or so) after that something happened to it (not sure what) but it just got really shoddy and semi-laggy. It's an alright router but I'm almost sure there's better routers out there for the price.

Can anyone else recommend the OP a router?

Another thought is to go to the Wireless "N" standard. I would look into that because I wouldn't want to buy a G and then wish I had just upgraded when I had a better chance to.
