"It struck me the other day while being miserable squatting that for all the talk and writing about how to squat, where to put the bar, how to program squats, there's a lack of talk on what to do before you squat. Maybe that's because I'm the only one who thinks it's worth talking about, but hopefully that's not the case."

Often squats are performed at or near the end of a workout

Who in their right mind does squats last? They're my first lift, and of course I warm up before hand as well as doing 2-3 lighter loads before reaching my workout weight.

Yes, big muscles and compounds first - always.

I don't Squat but if it's a leg day, I will always do quads and glutes first, followed by calves.

Hell's bells If I do a heavy high volume squat workout it will be the only thing I do that day other than eat and sleep.

Greg Everett is an olympic weightlifter and typically writes articles for other o-lifters. For them, the o-lifts (snatch, clean, jerk, etc) go first and everything else (including squats) follows.

It's almost ironic that squats are an accessory lift for him.

I hired a trainer to teach me the power clean, and he also said that the thing now is to do explosive lifts (i.e. power clean) before the slow/heavy lifts such as squats. I still squat first, though.
