Before becoming Governor, how popular was Reagan as an actor?

I guess this question's geared toward the older folks but relatively, how popular of an actor was Ronald Reagan when he ran for Governor of California? I mean, was his name common enough for the average joe to know who he was?

Just trying to get some perspective in light of the gubernatorial race and Arnold. 😛

Between being an actor and a politician he was a speaker for General Electric (I think).

I'll check when I get home, I've got his biography on my bookshelf.

Ronald Reagan began his career as a sports announcer on radio, then moved to Hollywood and became a movie star. Reagan made over fifty movies as a reliable supporting actor or benign leading man, but his real calling seemed to be in politics.

"Reagan doesn't have the presidential look." was the assessment of a UA exec. when turning Reagan down for the role of President in The Best Man, [1964]

Kind of funny. Sounds like he wasn't exactly a super star, but was still well known.
