An eight-year-old girl needed 175 stitches in her face and head after she was mauled by a dog having been told by its owners it was safe for her to stroke.

This is why I'll never trust a strange dog or it's owner's opinion of it. Dogs are dangerous and unpredictable and the only ones I'll ever really trust are the ones that are too small to do me any harm.

Jesus, the owners of the dog JUST adopted it and they let a stranger pet it when they aren't even around? That's crazy - THEY don't even know the dog yet. The owners of the dog should do jail time for idiocy.

Wow. I really feel for the girl. I had something similar happen to me when I was ~2 1/2 years old. The neighbors had an Alaskan Huskee that they had neglected and kept tied up, so much so that the collar it had as a puppy had grown into its neck by that time. I got too close to the dog wanting to pet it while playing in my parents' yard, and the dog reacted violently due to the neck/collar issue. Ultimately, it was not the dog's fault, but the owners there. It had to be put down. I have a total of 6 scars on the right side of my face, and ultimately had to have reconstructive surgery. They have healed well since then and aren't very visible other than a few thin lines where the stitches were. This girl is much older and will have a much tougher time, both physically and mentally. :(

This is how I feel about people as well.

It's a dog. What did you expect? Even the sweetest dog can have a moment of anger/terror and act upon it.

No way that dog should be put down. It was an accident...that's it. The girl went to pet the dog willingly.

After having asked and been told it was safe to pet. Left to her own devices, she may have thought it unsafe.

The Japanese Akita is considered to be one of the most dangerous dogs in Britain, with numerous reported attacks which have resulted in the victim needing stitches and surgery.
Akitas are not listed as dangerous dogs under the Dangerous Dogs Act but they are classed as a fighting breed.
I didn't know that, all the Akitas I've seen are pretty tame.

People are worse than dogs when it comes to random acts of violence. It just doesn't seem as bad when it's a member of your species doing the equivalent of what happened in the OP. The communication barrier isn't there when it comes to people, so their motivations and mental processes seem less "alien". There's probably not much difference when you get down to it though.

If I had a dog that attacked a child like that Akita did, I would put the dog down.

About 14 or 15 years ago, my dog bit a chunk of nose off of a 7 or 8 year old kid. I applauded the dog though.

I told the kid he couldn't pet (my then puppy-aged) dog, and the kid ran off to get a pencil, and came back and stabbed it into my dog. I am glad the dog got him, because I'd have been in jail for kicking the shit out of a kid.

To this day I still see the kid around, and it makes me feel good that his face is still disfigured to this day.

Moral of the story? Some people deserve to get bit.

In that case, your dog didn't attack the kid like the Akita in this story did. Your dog was defending itself, therefore it didn't deserve to die.

The owners of that dog need to be drug out into the street and beat within an inch of their life. Any human aggressive dog kept as a "pet" should be put down.

QFT

I had a large chunk of calf muscle bitten out by a neighbor's dog when I was 8, and it already knew me fairly well.
