My old crappy video card can't support fast enough refresh rates past 800x600 for continual use. I can go up to 1600x1200 or 1024x768, but at great expense to my vision.

Why upgrade when the old stuff is good enough for what you do frequently?
 
i wouldn't want to run anything above 1024x768x85 on a 17" monitor anyway. i did that for years on my good old viewsonic optiquest 17"

whats a good refresh rate. mine is set right now at 60.
