In reference to this thread, it has always annoyed me how some people think that certain beers contain almost no alcohol at all, while others contain massive amounts.

Look people - if you're buying a light beer or something, it's still going to have between 4-4.5% alcohol (unless you're in Utah). At the other end of the spectrum, for regular consumer beers, it's like 5-5.5%, right?

Maybe I'm wrong, who knows, anyone have a good chart?

Some of the light stuff and depending on the state can be in the 3.5% range. Also depending on the state have a limit of around 6%. Most "macro" brews are in the 4%-5.5% range.

Many Belgian beers range in the 8%-10.5% range.
Strong Ales are in the 9% range.
Imperial porters/stouts are in the 6%-8%range.

There's a few really high octane types out there that are in the 12%- 15% range. But they are pretty rare.

so you are saying that 25% more alcohol isn't much?

alot of the beers i drink regularly go as high as 6.5%, thats 50% more alcohol

however now i'm going to have to go beer shopping to figure out which beers those were :D

Probably not. The point I was trying to make, at least in my case, is that I can sit and drink Bud Light at the bar all night and feel fine. Put a 6'er of anything decent in me and I'm good to go. Maybe it is because I reproduce Bud Light faster (IE pissing it out) or because my blood just won't accept shitty beer alcohol. No idea.

EDIT: Also, when I drink shitty beer I get this bloated, "way too full" feeling.

this. I'm definately a high octane drinker, Imperial or Double IPAs and Impeial Souts. There are some really good belgians out there that are high grav. I had one from Wyerbacker the other night. The Quad. Tasted like bananas.

I didn't really realize that Dogfish head 120 has 20%abv.
That's an ungodly amount for a beer, and I'm not sure how they keep the yeast from dying.

AFAIK the most possible is that Sam Adams concoction with around 25% IIRC....

Nothing like a good Maredsous 10 ... the 10 is for 10%.

And it's delicious.

bit pricey, though. Worth every penny.

Semi-hijack.

So if you drink 2 beers at 4% alc. is it eqiuvalent to 1 beer at 8% alcohol?
Blood alcohol content wise?
"Feeling" drunk wise?

I just seems to me that 12 beers at 4% get you more messed up that a 6 pack at 8%. Maybe it's just in my head? Maybe it has to do with teh volume of the liquid?

I have 7 bottles cellering from January 2007. It's probably hit about 23-24% by now. Great beer.

You would be much worse off from the six pack. you will drink those far more quickly than the 12.

So basically, you just proved to everyone here that you know SQUAT about beer? :p Stick to your Keystone, since apparently it's within the same range as other beers. :p

For me, it's the opposite. I'd down 12 light beers faster than I would 6 heavy beers, as I'd feel the heavy beers moreso than the light beers. (Light would be like downing water, heavy I'd have a tough time just downing one after another) Just Wednesday at Happy Hour I made it to 3 IPA's before I had to leave. (Normally stay about 2-3 hours) I'd have downed 6-8 Bud Lights easy no sweat during that same time period.

Well, I know Busch Light pretty well :) But no, I haven't had a lot of the higher-end ones. Definitely interested though- I would love to go tasting some time.

Exact same thing for me. When I have a couple heavier ones it really begins to feel uncomfortable... Whereas I can sit and drink a 12 of Busch Light in a couple hours and feel ok.

Some states have laws that beers sold in certain places can only have certain percentages. Here in MN we have what's known as the dreaded 3-2. 3.2% alcohol and it's the max percentage for the beer sold in grocery stores. I think it was the strongest beer sold at the Metrodome at one point, but that law may have been changed.

I take it you're still pretty young? You have plenty of time. Your profile says Seattle - my friend says there's a few good local breweries up there, and they're not all snobbishly Bud/Miller Light like here in Texas. (They're featured everywhere due to their marketing agreements and deals they cut with bars/restaurants)

Not sure if you have any good grocery stores that sell beers by the bottle, but if they do, grab 6 a week and try something new. I started doing that last year and found a lot of beers I like that I normally would never have given a second chance. :)

no.

percentage = concentration. 1 12oz can of 4% alc = 4% alcohol consumption. (in 12 total oz)
2 12oz cans of 4% alc = 4% alcohol consumption (in 24 total oz)

abv = alcohol by volume. yes, you will consumer more total alcohol, and more and more, by default, will increase your bac, but the consumption does not increase the intake.

more will effect you, sure, but it takes more time to metabolize. 2 4% beers is probably more like 1 6% beer or so. ...maybe?

i think that all sounds more confusing than it is. I have a huge headache, btw... :(

wtf dawg

4.00% alcohol * 2 * 12oz = .96oz pure alcohol
8.00% alcohol * 1 * 12oz = .96oz pure alcohol

yes, they are equivalent

its the volume of alcohol, over time, that fucks you up

Some of my Imperial Russian Stouts hit 14% abv. I challenge anyone to remain standing after drinking 6 of those. :)
